If on a USB connection, run 'sane-find-scanner'.

Jwiz=
lmdefive@lmdefive:~$ sane-find-scanner

# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

Check if libsane-hpaio is already installed on your system (apt search ...).
Then you should 'sudo apt remove' any hplip-package still lingering on your system.
Due to the change to driverless printing in Debian 11 hplip will not work with scanners (unless you install the hp-plugin from HP).
P.S.
you might need to do a 'systemctl restart cups-browsed' after that.

Try this, in the Terminal (per jwiz, modded)

Check if libsane-hpaio is already installed on your system:
apt search libsane-hpaio

Then you should 'sudo apt remove' any hplip-package on your system:
sudo apt remove hplip

Install hp-plugin:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ng/plugins
Try these: Right-click, Save Link As.
hplip-3.22.6-plugin.run
hplip-3.22.6-plugin.run.asc

You might need to do a 'systemctl restart cups-browsed' after that:
systemctl restart cups-browsed

You ONLY need the hplip-plugin if you are still using HP's own hplip driver package.
The libsane-hpaio will take care of that when using driverless printing.

I've been fiddling with my old HP Photosmart AiO trying to reproduce your problem.
There might be a very simple solution to your scanner problem.

It seems that there are 2 configs for the printer/scanner in your system.
I assume they are the old LMDE4 and new LMDE5 ones.

If you run the 'simple-scan' application it should search for available devices and finds both.
Just switch to the other device config in the drop-down menu there.
That'll do the trick.
