LMDE 5 No Sound Dummy Output

Post by eagle89 »

I am trying to get LMDE 5 working on an Acer Chromebook 14. This Chromebook has a finicky sound configuration but I have successfully gotten it to play audio from multiple distros previously including Linux Mint 20.3, Pop_OS!, Elementary OS, Ubuntu, and Debian 11. I most recently installed Debian 11 with cinnamon desktop and the sound worked straight out so I thought I'd give LMDE a try because I prefer the Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.3 desktop look/feel over Debian 11 with cinnamon. Oddly, when I install LMDE 5 I only see the Dummy Output in sound settings, have NO sound and NONE of the tricks that worked with the myriad of ubuntu-based distros work on LMDE (I believe b/c it is debian, not ubuntu). Since the sound works on Debian 11 Cinnamon with NO modifications, I'm pretty sure there is something unique with LMDE 5 install/configuration that is preventing the sound from working. Just did a fresh install this morning and haven't tried anything yet, hoping the community can help me troubleshoot the root cause and get the sound working on this machine with LMDE 5. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Here is the output of a cat /proc/asound/cards command:

Code: Select all

 0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0x91314000 irq 315
 1 [chtrt5650 ]: chtrt5650 - chtrt5650
                      chtrt5650
and here is the output of an aplay -l command:

Code: Select all

Pls. check (apt search) if 'firmware-sof-signed' is installed on your system?

The other option would be to create /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf (if not there already) and put in:
options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1

firmware-sof-signed was NOT installed so I installed it and rebooted. After reboot, still no sound and still Dummy Output is only sound card found. I created alsa.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d folder and added text as described, saved, rebooted. After reboot, still no sound and still Dummy Output is only sound card found. Thanks for the suggestion....keep them coming!

If you have firmware-sof installed try 'snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=3' instead.

1. Download this repository to Downloads:
https://github.com/bliutwo/dummy-sound-fix-ubuntu
2. Right-click on the file and extract the file in Downloads.
3. Right-click inside the extracted folder and choose "Open in Terminal".
4. Run the following command in Terminal:
bash install.sh
5. Reboot.
6. After steps 2-4, you will be unable to update your system. The following command will re-allow you to update it:
sudo apt-get install -f
OR
bash fix.sh
7. Simply re-run steps 3-5 if you reboot your system and/or sound stops working.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. None worked for but but I was successful in getting the sound to work in LMDE 5 and it was actually SUPER EASY. Not sure if this package should have been detected during installation or what but in all of my online research and comparing the LMDE install to a Debian Install, but all I had to do was install "firmware-intel-sound" from synaptic package manager, reboot, and sound works and sound card is recognized in pavucontrol and sound settings. Nothing else needed adjusting. SO, SO happy...love this distro! Thanks for the feedback helping me reach a solution.

Same issue, same solution that worked for me. Thanks eagle89!
