<SOLVED> Need help getting Intel UHD 750 driver working

Post by seaker »

I just build a machine using an ASRock H570M-ITX/ac motherboard using an Intel i7-11700K processor which has the Intel UHD 750 graphics on it. The OS is LDME 5. The problem is that I can not get the machine to display full HD (1920x1080) instead I'm stuck with a VESA resolution of 800x600.

dmesg | grep i915 returns:

Code: Select all

[ 1.378303] i915 0000:00:02.0: Your graphics device 4c8a is not properly supported by the driver in this
kernel version. To force driver probe anyway, use i915.force_probe=4c8a
[ 64.574579] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: No i915 binding for Intel HDMI/DP codec
I tried adding GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="i915.force_probe=4c8a" into /etc/default/grub and then ran update-grub. It appeared to update grub. Rebooted and nothing has changed. I still am stuck at 800x600 and dmesg reports the same thing. From what I've been able to find it appears that the kernel, 5.10.0-19-amd64, that is running should support Intel UHD 750. So, what am I missing?

Here is the results of inxi -Fxxxrz:

Use

instead of [c][/c] for large blocks of code.

"Debian Stable" (the base distribution for LMDE) is not ideal for relatively new hardware.

My advice: switch to the latest version of main edition, LM 21 Vanessa.

Of course you can try to install a "backported" recent kernel

sudo apt install -t bullseye-backports linux-image-amd64

Similarly you can get somewhat "fresher" firmware

sudo apt install -t bullseye-backports intel-microcode

There are bits of intel microcode in an additional package

sudo apt install -t bullseye-backports firmware-misc-nonfree

However, the critical package for hardware acceleration "intel-media-va-driver-non-free" is not available on Debian backports.

Try to force-load the appropriate i915 driver by:

echo "options i915 force_probe=4c8a" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf

Welcome to the forum, seaker.

Where did you find information that the 5.10 kernel should support UHD 750?

My recommendation is to just backport a newer kernel so you can get the proper drivers. Intel does not recommend doing force probes which may be why it did not work.

You should also check to make sure you are running the most recent BIOS/UEFI for your motherboard.

Thanks! But it didn't work. I'll try the backport.

Unfortunately, I've looked at enough different sites and places that I can not say. Also, because of that and my noobness with LDME, it is distinctly possible I misread something along the way.

I did check the BIOS, and I have the latest for this motherboard. Trying the backport next.

Well, unfortunately this did not work either. After rebooting, dmesg | grep i915 is still showing the same message to try to force it. And that is still set in grub. I think I'm going to have to pull LDME off and try Vanessa. I appreciate all the help all of you have provided. Thanks!
