mint debian 32 bit support after LMDE 5

Post by mint-maniac »

I know Mint 19.3 is the last 32 bit Ubuntu based version of Mint that there will be and support of it will soon be up.

So I've been playing with both Debian 11.6 (32 bit) and Mint LMDE 5 (32 bit) on some older machines. I know LMDE is also Debian 11 based so the support time should be in line with that Debian version.

But will Mint continue to support 32 bit on a Debian base AFTER LMDE 5? I couldn't find anything to indicate it either way and although I like the Mint version better, future support is also a consideration.

The reason the Ubuntu based version of Linux Mint no longer has a 32-bit release is because Ubuntu no longer supports 32-bit. Nothing is said yet about a future LMDE version but it seems likely it can have a 32-bit release because a) Debian still supports 32-bit and b) it is the only Linux Mint edition that has a 32-bit release so the last option for Linux Mint users on very old hardware. There is always the option to upgrade LMDE 5 to a future Debian version, should LMDE 6 not support 32-bit. But I would be real surprised if the 32-bit release gets axed for LMDE 6 next year.

That would be my assumption as well but I've never seen it stated so was curious if anyone saw a stance on mint's continued use of 32 bit debian.

I also searched and saw that there was a provided lmde 4 to lmde 5 upgrade mechanism and am hoping they would also provide one for lmde 5 to lmed 6 (should it happen). mint has been good at providing ones for their ubuntu based versions and I tend to use them rather than having to reinstall everything.

That you can safely bet on will be provided.

iirc, Clem said, in a comment on the mint blog, that there would be a 32 bit version for as long as debian provided 32-bit.

I know for a fact I'll be wanting 32-bit lmde 6 for several machines, or at very least mintmenu, mint-artwork, mint icons.

LMDE5 came out less than a year ago. There are usually two years between releases so LMDE6 won't be happening for another year.

Five has been out for just a year, where have I been, did I fall asleep?

Over at Linuxmint.com I saw this but all links are dead.

"LMDE 6 "Felicia"
LMDE 6
Main Edition Edition
On this page you can download Linux Mint either directly or via torrent as an ISO image. Make sure to verify your image after downloading it."

No, it is not a phishing scheme. That what the person who wrote the topic title erroneously thought was happening. Did you read the topic or just the title? The explanation in the topic indicates those pages are meaningless left-over pages from the website update. They are not an indication LMDE6 or LMDE7 are available (because they are not).
