Cannnot authenticate with IPW2100

Post by pompeyrodney »

I am re-posting after not realising there was a separate section for LMDE, original post is at viewtopic.php?f=52&t=366304&p=2128666#p2128666

If ok I shall repost diagnostics information.

I have tried turning off security as I was told the Intel 2100 card does not support WPA2, perhaps not even WPA, but I still cannot authenticate, password is correct. I would be most grateful of any help offered as this machine is owned by a very good friend of mine. Thanks.

You have to set the router to accept WPA as well as WPA2. Something like this in my router:

This is not something you would like to do for an extended period of time because it is unsafe.
If you think the issue is solved, edit your original post and add the word solved to the title.

Hello pompeyrodney,

can you setup a hotspot with a phone and connect to it?

In your network connection settings for your network, you can try the following: Specify the BSSID (the MACaddress of your router) and select your device (wlp2s3 or MAC address). And disable IPv6. Maybe this helps. But I have to say, I don't know LMDE and how the network.settings are there.

Are there many networks around you? What shows (terminal fullscreen):-

Code: Select all

nmcli device wifi list

Hi, I have tried the router option of WPA/WPA2 with no joy, I will try to connect to a hotspot on my phone though I am not sure what encryption that is using?

Hello pompeyrodney,

I have an android phone connected to my home network with WPA2. I can configure the phone hotspot without security (there are two options: no and WPA2). I can only configure it, when the hotspot is disabled, by pressing a little longer on the hotspot entry. In the advanced view I can change the security.

You're correct about the Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini-PCI Adapter. It doesn't have WPA/WPA2 capability. You'd need to set your router's setting to WEP encryption.

If your router has the capability, my suggestion would be to change out the Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini-PCI Adapter with a more updated one which I think you can on your machine. As of now, the maximum speed you have is an 802.11b (11 Mbps). Even an 802.11g (54 Mbps) would be a great improvement.

It all depends on your router's capability.

Hi HAWR
With the hotspot option I am able to connect to my phone with the security off. If i then turned on security (WPA2-Personal), to my surprise I can still connect. Can I ask what you make of that please?

Hi Jerry
I didn't realise that was what the B meant in the name, I thought it would be at least G rated. If I am sable to swap out the card for something faster then I think that is a no brainer, thanks for your help.

Yes, that would be better, but fitting cards are not so wides spreaded. But this here fits and supports wpa and 802.11B/G (see the product details):
