[HOW TO] Uninstall speech-dispatcher to get rid of crackling, buzzing and other bad audio

Post by antikythera »

For some reason there's a package called speech-dispatcher installed that messes with sound output from certain realtek HD audio codecs. It is most noticeable playing back audio in Firefox as part of a stream from YouTube.

speech-dispatcher is not necessary unless you require orca for accessibility reasons.

If you do not, it is safe to remove them with this single command

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove speech-dispatcher
The same applies for the Main Edition of Mint.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

you can disable autorun for speech-dispatcher

Code: Select all

/etc/default/speech-dispatcher

Code: Select all

# Defaults for the speech-dispatcher initscript, from speech-dispatcher

# Set to yes to start system wide Speech Dispatcher
RUN=no
