Has anyone tried this yet? I was unsuccessful with LMDE 3... only got a small portion of the meta-package, and some of the Mate apps were either missing or "modified" / "morphed"

I know it is weird and makes no sense according to the way https://wiki.debian.org/MATE is worded in the installation section.
Not sure exactly what I did because it was a long time ago and I don't use Debian anymore except on an old headless 32bit machine so I can't really test it to confirm..
And after that I got really picky and figured out how to just install the core and pick and chose what I wanted.
Then I realized how much Debian forces on you anyway and that was the end of using Debian for much of anything for me LoL
That wasn't a put down or a flame just the truth of what happens with Debian and my preference to totally customize my machine to my liking and it could be possible with Debian I just never seriuously tried.

I searched "mate extras" in Synaptic, selected the mate-desktop-environment-extras, installed... log out/log in and Damn! it's all there (I think)
so far no glitches, other than bunch of redundant Cinnamon/Mint xapps
I will try to quit the Grouchy Old Man pissing and moaning crud for a bit.

Re: LMDE 4
Downloaded the beta on a torrent & have installed as a VB guest.
The installation was not as straightforward as most VBs (had to start in compatibility mode & then re-adjust the monitor settings in order to navigate through the installation program) but got there without too much aggravation.
Not explored it that much yet but seems almost identical to Mint 19.3 - so happy enough to use without being awed by any new features..

Mate-tweak and mate-screensaver were missing but all is ok with my mate session. Then I deleted cinnamon.
Do we know if this beta will be upgradable to the final release ?

LMDE 4 - Mate
Re: LMDE 4
Using Synaptic to install mate-desktop-environment-extras I got Mate-tweak and mate-screensaver ...
Did a second install on a laptop with WiFi, same results.
Lots of redundant xapps and Cinnamon cruft in the menu, but edit main menu to not show the cruft is easy.
Did not uninstall anything, yet.
BTW: this Beta was advertised as "upgradable" to final...but maybe the Mate addition will be effected.
Reinstall is trivial.

Yes, that's the current intent.Monsieurzik wrote: Do we know if this beta will be upgradable to the final release ?
Re: LMDE 4
It begins as a Debian 10 stable and will be. The "upgrades" are tweaking the Minty tools, desktop environment etc to make it readily work flawlessly for the masses. I've already mega-tweaked my install and no longer consider it "beta". It's tweaked specifically for MY machine. My ISO might not work correctly on anothers.JoeFootball wrote: ⤴Thu Feb 27, 2020 8:12 amYes, that's the current intent.Monsieurzik wrote: Do we know if this beta will be upgradable to the final release ?
Clems final should/will be ready to go on most rigs. That's why things like MintDeb and MX are better for most people to use because the many hours of tweaking have been done for most peoples needs. Their tools are a HUGE plus and even us old schoolers really enjoy the simplicity as opposed to "cooking your own 10"

LMDE 4 with Mate is hugely more complex.
Configurations being outside the norms of Debian, and the multitude of Mint/Ubuntu gizmos (many are not desirable for me) may feel familiar to You but not to me.
That said I will continue to make my tweaks, but I am ever mindful of the amount of effort to get to my "sweet spot" working from both directions.

Yet the screensaver application should have been I would think.

Agreed. Clems focus is Cinamininimum... Maybe someone else is cooking a super tweaked Mate ? Like I've said before. If you're affixed to XFCE.... Go MX19 and be done with it.
Nothing Cinimuminmimum will ever surpass the minty flavor.
Re: LMDE 4
Testing out LMDE 4 Beta and ran into a problem/bug (or am I doing something wrong?). I selected my disk and manually setup the partitions. I deleted the SWAP and EXT4 partitions and created a single, XFS partition. After doing that, I went back to the 'main' installer and clicked 'refresh' and the installer detected my drive with a single XFS and I right clicked on the XFS partition, and set it as root. But, when I proceeded with the install, looks like the installer forces the partition back to ext4 format: (note the "Format as" ext4 column). How do I make the installer honor the xfs filesystem I want to use? (I tried to edit the partition again and I can format it back to xfs but as soon as I'm back in the installer, same thing....... the installer forces the fs back to ext4.)

Re: LMDE 4
I have make a clean install to LMDE4 beta.
When live the installer to formatting my disk take an error to mount partition sda1 on f stab.
I have use custom formatting all the partition to ext4 with label mount-point to / and the installation going fine.
the Greek localization going well and all are now in Greek.
the layout icons flags are working by default. In Lmde3-cindy I has fix it.
My hardware working well too.

Re: LMDE 4
hi guys got compiz working beautiful with LMDE 4 with mate and compiz
Re: LMDE 4
first I added mate-desktop-environment-extras with Synaptic, that was satisfactory.
Then I added this to /etc/apt/sources.list
#======SID==========
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib
Then I used the Update Manager to fully update, then reboot.
All seems to be OK, still have a very odd truncated (dated/modified) version of Synaptic.
I need to do some homework and learn how the sources.list.d effects a normal system
it seems to be OK so far.
I do have the Mate apps and have set them in preference over those oddball one size fits all xapps.

LMDE4 is still in Beta - yet all these people are trying to make it work in unusual ways.
Why not just load a vanilla Debian and apply these various cunning "fixes" to that?

Re: LMDE 4
That's because the default is to format as ext4, unless you select otherwise.gene0915 wrote: After doing that, I went back to the 'main' installer and clicked 'refresh' and the installer detected my drive with a single XFS and I right clicked on the XFS partition, and set it as root.
To do so, rather then just selecting "Assign to /" at that point, select "Edit" where you can not only set the mount point for the partition, but how you want to partition formatted (or not formatted at all, which may be an option if you've already formatted it).

When I distro hopped, I tried virtually every distro under the sun. Tried many of them for weeks/months at a time. After a while, I decided I wanted to be in the Debian universe for my media server. I can NOT STAND some of the (IMHO) lame things vanilla Debian does. (doesn't default to adding your user to the sudo group (which I think EVERY SINGLE DEBIAN BASED distro does by default, because it's logical and makes sense).... dmesg needing sudo access to run, the people on their support forums were pretty much all douches, which shocked me as I find the Arch forums very welcoming and friendly).... just to name a few off the top of my head).
Mint makes Debian 100,000x better to use. Don't know what it is but it's just freaking amazing! I want a ROCK SOLID OS for my media server and I believe LMDE 4 will give me that. In the mean time, I use Mint 19.3 Cinnamon on my server.
FWIW, I'd love to see the Mint team just give up on basing their spins on Ubuntu and focus -ALL- efforts on LMDE.
