Okay, play something with sound, and while it's playing run pacmd list-sinks and paste that output. I'm running short on ideas, so just asking for that hoping it helps spurs some thoughts.

Damn! No help there.

Is there still any version of Windows on this machine? Or any other OS besides Mint?

Has the sound been tested after a cold boot?

Also, does your BIOS have any sound related stuff in it. Maybe switching (if possible) from HDAudio to AC97 is the ticket.

There are no other OSs on this laptop. As I said before, it had Win XP earlier and sound worked perfectly from the speakers.

Yes, it's been cold booted every day.

At this point, should I replace this with any other Linux OS?

Well, it might be a good idea to try a few Live ISO's of others. Also try the one you used here if you haven't already. Could have just been a bad install. Also try the Ubuntu version of Mint, but as the system appears to have some age, I'd suggest at least starting with Mint 19.2 as it has an older kernel that might be better suited to your hardware.

I would suggest for non Mint choices to try MXLinux (it's also Debian based, so should be somewhat easy to adapt to) and any flavor of Manjaro, as it has a completely different set of sources.

I am trying to reinstall LMDE4 but it would not let me boot from CD (have no USB boot option). I am guessing this may be because I already have LMDE installed so it's skipping to boot from HDD.

I will try to burn a LM19.2 xcfe iso on a new CD and will try to boot from it.

You might need to enter your BIOS first to move the CD to the top of the boot list. Just guessing here.
