LMDE vs Debian Buster?
I dont get it .....
i thought LMDE was supposed to be a relatively straight Debian Buster with Minty overlay?
if so why does Debian Buster non-free live disc work better for me?
for instance i dont have the same wifi trouble (Media Tek the one that seems to require you to be stuck on kernel 5.4.26 in mint) , however i did have to install lsusb, lshw lspci to get my G933 Logitech headset working with sound.
i could jump from kernel 4.19 to 5.9.0.0bpo_amd64 in debian buster and wifi still works..
what im not sure on what to do is how to add complete media codecs set to debian buster??
by complete media codecs i mean free and non-free codecs.....
i would ask questions at Debian forums but cant seem to get past their registration form

Does Mint and Ubuntu use this?
Re: LMDE vs Debian Buster?
That's true and also it's quite tedious to remove their packages. There were issues when their packages broke VLC, MPlayer etc.

Insecure not unstable?
@kc1di
The link you gave to cretsiah installs deb-multimedia.org which seems to be a website rename from debian-multimedia.org?According to the Debian maintainers, the domain debian-multimedia.org is no longer being used by the former managers and is now in the name of someone unknown. This means that the repository is no longer secure and users should remove it from their sources.list file as soon as possible

Re: LMDE vs Debian Buster?
Both. I missed also.
Are you talking to me? If so, no link from me was given here.

That's an unofficial third-party repo for Windows media.Lucap wrote: The link you gave to cretsiah installs deb-multimedia.org which seems to be a website rename from debian-multimedia.org?

Debian: the unofficial Multimedia repository is considered insecure

no sources are provided, the author is way out of touch or does not understand.

Which states that it's an unofficial third-party repo.
Re: LMDE vs Debian Buster?
Which states it's considered insecure and should be removed , which is not stated in the link @kc1di posted...

Removed from what? LMDE doesn't use it. I wouldn't imagine Debian does either.Lucap wrote: Which states it's considered insecure and should be removed ...
Yes, you're correct, if someone really wants Windows media codecs. We should notify Shahriar Shovon at once.Lucap wrote:... which is not stated in the link @kc1di posted

I don't understand what you find so confusing about post 1 & 2 and what cretsiah might install without knowing , are you saying the debian information should be kept quiet?JoeFootball wrote: ⤴Sat Jan 30, 2021 10:12 am Removed from what? LMDE doesn't use it. I wouldn't imagine Debian does either.

I don't find anything confusing, nor did I say that any information should be kept quiet.Lucap wrote: I don't understand what you find so confusing about post 1 & 2 and what cretsiah might install without knowing , are you saying the debian information should be kept quiet?
To be clear, I would agree that it would be a bad idea if the OP were to install that unofficial third-party repo for Windows media codecs which Debian does not recommend.
That said, it's not in use by LMDE, and there are official Debian repos for multimedia codecs should someone require them.

If you like you can click the link on his page and report the error.
the page was renamed to deb-multimedia.org ages ago, it's almost forgotten the spoofed page ever existedJoeFootball wrote: ⤴Sat Jan 30, 2021 10:12 amRemoved from what? LMDE doesn't use it. Re: LMDE vs Debian Buster?
Trying to return to the original question
What codecs do you miss specifically? Usually Debian nonfree iso with firmware installs some codecs.
If you'd install VLC and ffmpeg, many popular codecs will be installed automatically.
But still you can pull them from repository, for eg pick what you need
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install libx264-dev
sudo apt-get install libx265-dev libnuma-dev
sudo apt-get install libvpx-dev
sudo apt-get install libfdk-aac-dev
sudo apt-get install libmp3lame-dev
sudo apt-get install libopus-dev

Have you forgotten that Linux Mint is supposed to be Newbie Friendly and how exactly would new users supposed to know which part of the information posted in the link kc1di posted should be followed and what parts should be treated with caution because a Windows to Linux newbie would think they need to search for and install 3rd party windows codecs when they don't.
Debian specifically had issues with the DOM website so why you're posting in contrary to the official advisory i have no idea...

Re: LMDE vs Debian Buster?
@Lucap: I did poor job of making super clear citations.
I believe this is pretty clear:
https://bits.debian.org/2013/06/remove- ... media.html
I did not intend for you or anyone else to think otherwise.
*However using the Debian "unofficial repositories" does NOT create a security risk.
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unof ... -firmware/
"Unofficial non-free images including firmware packages:
Here are some extra images, equivalent to the normal images we produce regularly except in that they also include non-free firmware to make things easier on some systems requiring proprietary but redistributable firmware.
See http://wiki.debian.org/Firmware for more details."
follow links, read all of it
