I wonder if LMDE 5 will be released BEFORE Debian 12 is released at this point.

There is no information about LMDE 5 yet. An news about and plans for upcoming releases are published on the blog, in the monthly news: https://blog.linuxmint.com/. I get that if you're using LMDE you'd want to know but right now there's nothing to tell yet. Subscribe to the blog to keep up with the news; any word about LMDE 5 will be there first.
I have reviewed the Blog many times, and the word Subscribe, does not exist.

I mostly rely on Clem making a new Post in this forum, then go read it.

for me "the blog" is very difficult to read... I have it in my RSS feed reader, sometimes I spot something in the snip-its that is of interest... but I probably miss most of it.

ubuntu comes out in april 22.04. so this is probably where work on Mint 21 will begin.
so logically LMDE5 could be released before April.
I'm just thinking.

Being a new user of LMDE 4 I too wonder when LMDE 5 will be available. I prefer this distro over the standard Mint Cinnamon due to the fact it is based on a Debian stable release, fewer updates needed and little to no Ubuntu influence. Looking at Debian release cycle and EOL dates for Buster -10 it shows that it will reach its EOL this summer. See Debian website: https://endoflife.software/operating-sy ... nux/debian Knowing this, and seeing that LMDE 4 was released in March 2 year ago would it be unreasonable to expect that LMDE 5 to be released around the same time this year? I guess I am hoping and speculating at the same time.

yes, all you/we can do is speculate

Logic would tell us that LMDE 5 would come before "EOL" of Buster... if it is not abandoned.

however Buster is still supported, and will be until "probably" July, 2022 to June, 2024**

That's actually not a Debian website, but this is (with similar info) ...

I can't speak to a date, but I do expect LMDE 5 to be released well prior to Debian 10 hitting EOL.

each release of debian is supported on average for 3 years.
Actually LMDE is about a year late, right?

Yes, approximately a year thereafter, sometimes a little more (e.g., LMDE 3), and sometimes a little less (e.g., LMDE 4) ...

LMDE 3 (Aug 2018) based on Debian 9 (Jun 2017)

LMDE 4 (Mar 2020) based on Debian 10 (Jul 2019)

LMDE 5 (TBD) based on Debian 11 (Aug 2021)

It would be nice to have a release cycle time/date, even a tentative one would help those of us that use LMDE on their main system. Not knowing or hearing anything kind of feels like there is no real enthusiasm for this particular Mint distro by the developers. I realize that the Mint developers have a lot on their plate with the recent release of "EDGE". I would hope that they could throw us a bone by some mention of LMDE 5 other then they are going to start giving it some thought. Oh well, I guess they are helping me develop patients. :?

LM doesn't pre-define dates for any of their releases, LMDE or otherwise.

There hasn't been a monthly news blog post since the release of LM 20.3 a few weeks ago, but that's coming soon.

Thank you for the reply. As I noted I am new to Mint, however, LMDE checks off all the boxes for me. I will check out the blog and watch for any news on the next release of LMDE. :D

Excellent. The monthly news posts typically come at the end of the month.

I also sometimes thought that developers don't have much enthusiasm for LMDE.
I say this because I love LMDE4, and I use it every day.

Well they announced Oct 1 that work on it was beginning:
LMDE 5 Elsie

Work is set to start on the next version of LMDE which was given the codename “Elsie”. It will be based on Debian 11, ship with a Cinnamon desktop environment and support both amd64 and i386 architectures.
then in late November xenopeek said in this thread:
Linux Mint 20.3 is currently being worked on. After that release is done the team will continue work on LMDE 5.
then on the January 5 New Year's post, where Clem announced the release of 20.3, someone in the comments asked about LMDE5, and Clem replied:
That’s next on our list 🙂
So my understanding was, they aren't just giving it some thought, it seems it may be the priority now that 20.3 has been released. It's the next thing they plan to release. Now that still could take some time, but I expect we will see some further mention of it at least in next month's blog.

Thank you for the very detailed update on current info regarding LMDE 5. I have no doubt that the developers have a full plate, as mentioned I too find LMDE 4 exceptional and use it for all my computing needs. Being late to the show and not knowing all the background I may have sounded somewhat critical of LMDE current development, if so, that was not my intent. I guess I was looking for assurance that LMDE has a regular spot and long future with Mint. Thanks again for the replies.
