Contemplating getting a USB-C monitor so I can use my Cellphone

anyone doing that now, and if so, is it practical?

If you are, what models do you use, or consider the best?

My goal is to be able to view YouTube with my Cellphone which has Unlimited Data/month

My normal ISP is a wireless carrier with 100gB/month limit, and then it just shuts down to 128Kbps

Can you use your cellphone as a wireless hotspot? It's what I've done in the past - on holiday no wifi. No need to spend any money.

At least some of the carriers in the U.S. monitor whether one is using the data on the phone or using the phone as a hotspot and there are caps on hot-spot usage.

So you are wanting to attach a monitor to your cellphone so you get a bigger image? Is that the goal?

Maybe something like that could be done through some type of hub, but I would think there would also need to be software of some sort on the phone to make it happen. I did a quick search and there is something called MHL that the phone needs to support to make something like that happen.

our phones are on Verizon, and they have Blocked the internal Hotspot feature, and TV Casting in the new plans being offering this year.

folks on Grandfathered plans can still use the phone's hotspot and TV casting, but no more.

Back years ago, I use to install an Android App called " FoxFi " and it worked great, but Verizon now blocks that app also.

the new Senior Plan allows Unlimited Data use per month, ONLY if you use the phone to do so..... no way am I going to use the phone to surf the Internet, the screen is too small, and holding it in my hands, and no keyboard? nope, not going to happen.

So, that is why I want to use an external monitor so I can view Videos from the phone without exceeding my home internet limit of 100 gB/month

This past week, I went on a binge of watching youTube videos and went through 60gB in about 3 days..... that is super Bad news, because once the 100gB limit is reached, the bandwidth is throttled down to 128Kbps

I am going to stop in at our local BEST BUY store and see if their monitors will actually work with my phone.. before I leave the store.

I just don't want to buy one that is crap, hoping to get some opinions on brands that really work with phones, without using a lot of extra Adapters to HDMI to the TV, that is not going to happen.

I want to use it in my Recliner so a 13" or 15" screen is good enough

Hi AZgl1800,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

I do not think it would be worth it to buy a USB-C monitor just to watch YouTube videos, IMHO.

Anyone with a smartphone can cast their screen and or multi-media files (videos, music, pics) to their smartTV's or casting devices regardless of their phone provider or having an active HotSpot as long as they are connected to the same home network. If your smart TV or regular TV does not have the ability to receive casting and it has HDMI connectors, then you can buy a Chromecast device or Chromecast capable device to receive casting from smartphones or computers, etc... This would be way less expensive than buying a new monitor and are available at BestBuy, Amazon, etc...

Compare Chromecast with Google TV - Google Store
Chromecast = $29.99us 1080p, Chromecast with Google TV = $50 at 4k

Various Chromecast devices
Amazon.com : chromecast device

My Roku Streaming Stick +, which I love, can receive casting from my smartphones like media files and media files from my media server, but not from my Moto phones screens (no screen mirroring)? Note: My previous Nokia 6 phone could easily cast its screen (screencast) or cast media files to my Roku and other smart devices, but my nice newer Motorola smartphones cannot cast to Roku without using an app. most of which are not that good. The roku app is cool and its remote works well, but streaming from it is clumsy and hard to pick a video out of many. The Android YouTube app works well and clicking its cast button finds my Roku and works great after logging in, showing YouTube movies, regular Youtube videos, etc... I will be buying a Chromecast capable device soon just for screen casting.

You would think that in 2022 that all phone providers would provide free Hotspot with their unlimited plans but almost none of them do or their Hotspot is very limited or very expensive. I have and use "Visible" which runs on the Verizon network and it does have unlimited talk, text, and data with unlimited HotSpot for $25 us a month, but the Hotspot is limited to 5mbps which is enough for most things, barely.

As was mentioned, there is also a possibility that you can connect your phone using an adapter to HDMI, but then you have a long cable tethered from your phone to a TV or HDMI monitor. I think this only works it the phone support MHL.

Hope this helps ...
