Cinnamon 5.4
Hello everyone,
First post after being a long time in read-only mode on the forum.
Today, I had notifications for Cinnamon upgrade to 5.4 on my LMDE5.
Before upgrading, a simple question to all those who already did, especially those who use scripts with commands like dconf, gio, gsettings... addressing directly to the core of the DE :
The normal expectation of an upgrade would be that everything that worked before still works plus certain features, optimizations, a.s.o.
Is it the case or did you encounter some "things" deprecated or obsolete or simply not working anymore ?
Many thanks in advance for anyone taking some of his time to answer.

Read the section about Cinnamon 5.4 in the changelog for the main edition to know exactly what to expect.

Re: Cinnamon 5.4
Boas bro?
All good here, nothing noticeably broke across my two machines. Everything appears to be how it was before the updates but I did take full images with foxclone two days ago anyway so had a fallback plan.

I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.
Re: Cinnamon 5.4
I knew it, did read it for some time, but the advice was nonetheless valuable because a second reading after upgrade highlighted some issues I had with my theme using metacity (GraphiteZero). I'm aware I'll have to change because metacity is not supported with the new muffin/mutter version, but as I'm packing and unpacking in real life (= moving to another place to live), I have no time to search.
We all have our tricks to safeguard our systems. I'm using a dual-boot with Elsie and ... Elsie : one version allows every upgrade (kinda testing version of Elsie) and the other does not (made manually if the testing version is clean after some usage - kinda stable version of Elsie). On this "stable" version, I de-activated for the time being the backport repository (Cinnamon, Nemo...) to keep 5.2.7 Cin.antikythera wrote: ⤴Tue Aug 09, 2022 5:21 pm All good here, nothing noticeably broke across my two machines. But that's no critic to the dev team, since I could already notice better color rendering with Cinnamon 5.4. I had no real issues during upgrade, just the feeling I was moving to a new house, but as I'm already doing this irl, I'll wait before doing it on my system.
Seems time will be my best ally.
Thanks to both of you.

After the 5.4 update my cinnamon desktop is gone. There is only a 'computer' icon, no background no panels. Can do nothing but open a real terminal to find out I do not have a dektop at all:

If you have a working 5.2.7. Cinnamon timeshift snapshot you may do what I did to deactivate the Cinnamon upgrade :vimes666 wrote: ⤴Wed Aug 10, 2022 7:30 am After the 5.4 update my cinnamon desktop is gone. Sure Cinnamon 5.4 is more looking up to Ryzen, i9, ThreadRipper than down to Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon...
Re: Cinnamon 5.4
Yes, I had a snapshot so it is not a problem for the moment. I just wanted to mention it. At the moment I do not have much time to dig into it. I would like to hear if others with a 32 bit system encountered the same problem as I did.If you have a working 5.2.7. Cinnamon timeshift snapshot you may do what I did to deactivate the Cinnamon upgrade

Solid performance here!
Fixed is now my problem with twin NVidia video cards and a monitor in each running Nvidia drivers. Kudos!.
Display panel makes XRandr obsolete here. Thanks!
Keep up the good work!

Re: Cinnamon 5.4
For me, the switch came with a few surprises, but in the end they turned out to be a clear improvement over the previous version. However, Cinnamon still suffers from its inflexible and over-automated settings. It should always be possible for the user to make corrections at his own discretion, but the programmers don't seem to think of this possibility!

Re: Cinnamon 5.4
Two things I've come across that I do not like in this new desktop:
1) I'm big on doing the simple action of Ctrl+Spacebar then C to close out a window. It's so simple.
Well, can't do that, anymore.
2) The boot logo can no longer be customized (Or, at least, not easily). The logo.png file has been replaced with a series of logo animation files, eliminating customizing the boot logo (Or, at least, making it very difficult).
Fortunately, I had customized it before upgrading Cinnamon. The customization prior to the upgrade was preserved.
