Totem/VLC

Post by a5023152 » Wed Jun 04, 2014 3:24 pm

What is the idea behind having two media players installed by default in Linux Mint? IMHO, coming with only one would be less confusing to new users and would even save disk space (plus time and bandwidth in case of updates).

I'm guessing it has something to do with the way both programs have advantages and disadvantages with certain formats.

In my experience, while VLC usually plays everything I run across, it's nice to have an alternative to picks up what it doesn't.

Maybe someone else has a more official reason, but that's always how I've seen it. I currently have audacious, parole, smplayer and vlc.. quite a bit of overlap. :P

Totem is the default one for Gnome. There is also mplayer included by default no?
Nevertheless, too much choices never killed someone ;)
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

I vote that Totem gets the sack since it is redundant and less capable than VLC.

The totem package contains the totem-video-thumbnailer which I guess creates thumbnails for videos in file managers. I think that's the reason for including it.

I've got

Boomarang
dragon Player
Kaffeine
Kplayer
Kmplayer
Mplayer
Smplayer
Totem
VLC

VLC plays 99.999 percent of everything. For those others I have the other players.
