Support for cassette tape as a storage device

Post by labarthe » Mon Aug 25, 2014 2:44 pm

A suggestion for inclusion in future distributions of Linux Mint.
In order to provide some retro experience, Mint could include Ctape:
https://github.com/windytan/ctape/
an application that runs from the command line. Or, if I may, a bash script I made to provide a text user interface for it:

The scripts are ridiculously small, they won't hoard space at all.
There must be some target-audience for it. A quick "no" wouldn't be fair, in my opinion.

That sounds like an awesome program, but I don't think the Mint team will make it happen. Since not many people would use it, it would best be put in a repository for people to download if they want it. If I remember correctly, people didn't like using tapes for storage on the Commodore 64 because of long load times.

As I recall from my VIC-20 and C-64 days, you really couldn't store much data on a cassette tape. Maybe you should buy a couple of USB sticks? If you really want to save data on cassette tapes, you could probably compile that program from source.
