Mint-To-Go "Universal USB" packages

Post by SmithTech »

One of the many advantages to Linux is that you can install it on a USB drive, this is great but it has its limitations.
If you install it to a USB on one system it may not work on another due to hardware differences.
This can be worked around by creating a Live USB with persistence but this limits you to 2-4 GB for the persistence file.

I would like to suggest an option during install to create a "Universal USB Install"
This option would keep the hardware checks that are done by the live CD/USB intact so that it would still boot and work on any system the Live USB would work on but give you a full install otherwise with not space limitations.

This would be fantastic for someone who uses multiple systems but still needs a full set of applications and utilities. With the new SSD thumb drives that have been coming out lately you could practically take your full system install with you anywhere and boot it on any compatible hardware.

Update:
After doing some "googling" on this it appears this isn't a viable option as the installer is controlled by Ubuntu.
As an alternative I would like to suggest the creation of "Mint-To-Go" packages that would install the hardware checks to an existing installation.
Once a full install of Mint was done on a USB drive these packages could be installed to make the USB drive as truly portable as it possibly can be while maintaining the advantages of having a full install.
The Mint installer could be added back as well giving all the advantages of a LiveUSB and a full install.
