Please make Raw Studio availiable for Mint 18!

Post by Red Squirrel »

I can't get myself to get used to another program. It was available for 17 but when I switched to 18 I found that it's not available. There is no way to install it, not even through a PPA. It has the best workflow out of all the other programs I tried. Could it be added to Mint 18 as well? That would be great!

You may be able to build this application from source as described on this page under "Github repository"

I played around with trying to build it from source, but kept running into deadends. I suspect somebody that knows more about compiling might have better luck.

Yeah I kind of figured trying to install from source would be near impossible so did not bother trying, but thanks for trying to confirm my suspicion.

I guess I'll just have to try to get used to another program but I can't seem to get even close to the proper workflow I had in that one.

I had some down time at the first of the year - bad weather prevented me from doing anything fun, so I used it to see if I could work with a Windows-free workflow. I eliminated RawStudio early on because it appeared to me as if no one was working on the project and because I could not find a profile for my camera (and really did not feel like creating one).

I spent some time with After Shot Pro and UFRaw, but I quickly narrowed the choices to RawTherapee and darktable. For me they were the best tools for the job, and selecting one was not easy - each had something I really liked and something I did not like so much.

I chose darktable primarily because it allows for selective editing, which greatly reduced my need to edit the image further in PhotoShop or Gimp. I also prefer the the way Darktable handles Noise Reduction.

I have been very pleased with darktable. At first I found it confusing and overly complicated, and I felt a little overwhelmed because I did not know where to start. I might have given up on it if it weren't for Robert Hutton's excellent YouTube tutorials.

RawStudio has not seen any work done on it for well over 2 years. Debian have removed RawStudio from their repositories in 2014 https://packages.qa.debian.org/r/rawstudio.html for that reason. As Ubuntu imported this package from Debian it is no longer available there either. It is thus currently only available on Linux Mint 13 and 17. We won't be adding RawStudio to our repositories given its abandoned status.

However you can manually download the required packages from the Linux Mint 17 package base repository and install it with those on Linux Mint 18. The steps are as follows:

Download these four packages; follow the download link for your architecture (amd64 = 64 bit, i386 = 32 bit):
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libexiv2-12
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libgphoto2-port10
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/liblcms1
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/rawstudio

Then open your file manager and go to the directory where you have downloaded these 4 files. Double-click the files to launch the installer and install them from there. You must install them in the same order as above: libexiv2-12 first followed by libgphoto2-port10 and liblcms1, finally rawstudio. RawStudio seems to work fine for me afterward but I haven't used it before so might have missed issue you can spot.

Considering the abandoned status of RawStudio, it may be worth your time to look at alternatives http://alternativeto.net/software/rawst ... form=linux
