Topic Category Option

Post by Mik3e »

I suggest that the New Topic form include a Topic Category option. It would be a drop-down control with the 10 to 15 most common topic categories for the given forum, and Not Elsewhere Classified at the bottom. The category list in Desktop would include Cinnamon, Mate, KDE, XFCE, etc. The Networking list would have Samba, router, ethernet, wireless, etc. Software would have Firefox, Nemo, Software Sources, etc. Installation would have Mint 18.1, Mint 18, GRUB, UEFI, Live CD, Dual Boot, etc. In the forum display the Category and Subject would be combined to form the topic title (ie Category: Subject). Putting topics in categories will help the posters, moderators, and those of us trying to learn something, and it could be a useful search option.

How does this differ from the subforums we have for the same in the Desktops & Window Managers category? viewforum.php?f=54

This is too specific to turn into forums within our Networking category or to convert our Software & Applications forum to a category and turn your suggestions into subforums within that.

I get that you mean something else with "topic category" (more like tags) but with the phpBB software that this board uses that is what a category means: a group of related forums. phpBB doesn't offer an option to add tags to topics as you suggest, at least not that I know of.

If you click the cogwheel icon next to the search box in the top right of this page you go to advanced search search.php. You can narrow your search to specific categories and forums.
