LM Panel Launchers more like Gnome Dash / Unity Launcher?

I think it would be a useful and space-saving improvement if Linux Mint panel launchers behaved like in Gnome Dash and Unity Launcher.
Then we won't see that duplication when an app in those panel launchers is running -- to be displayed merely with one or more dots (or even in some better way) on the same launcher icon.

Are you talking about Cinnamon, MATE, KDE or Xfce? Yes, it matters. Because (a) somebody may know how you can already do that or (b) we can point you to where you can make feature requests of the developers of the desktop environment you're using.

Sorry, I thought, unless specified otherwise, Linux Mint would be understood as LM Cinnamon edition.
Cinnamon panel launchers don't display any indication if that application is open or not, leaving that job to "window list" applet, which displays all open windows with icons and titles.
The third party applet Icing Task Manager makes a big step towards this goal, managing tasks and app launchers. It even shows a number on an icon to indicate how many windows that app has open, but no indication when there is only one window, unfortunately. Otherwise that would do the job of a dock bar.
