Include Pre-installed Voice assistant software for Linux Mint

Post by ylevental » Tue Jul 18, 2017 6:07 pm

Microsoft has Cortana, Apple has Siri, Android has Assistant. Now it's our turn.

Don't just focus on functionality, also include easter eggs like making it sing songs on command.

I vote against-
1. Privacy. Those assistants you mention connect to a server to do the voice recognition (and probably more). I don't want Mint sharing that data or having those connections by default.
2. The state of open source voice recognition is not great.
3. Bloat.

I see where you stand on this :(. It's sad because I really like their functionality. I think it could still be useful, but as a non-default accessibility setting.

Hi "ylevental",

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

I agree with other responders, that there is some risk in using a service like this ...

FYI: There are these options available to use:

Sirius has been renamed to Lucida.
Sirius [1] is an open end-to-end standalone speech and vision based intelligent personal assistant (IPA) similar to Apple’s Siri, Google’s Google Now, Microsoft’s Cortana, and Amazon’s Echo.

I have an Android phone, and I guess it has something like that, but I've never felt any need for it. I do find the voice entry of text is quite convenient, though.
