Update Manager

Post by jimbobs »

Is it possible to modify Update Manager to warn users that a reboot is required when certain updates have been completed? As things stand, it appears that there is no need to do so. Even a generic message "some updates require a restart" would be, IMO, better that the current message "your system is up to date".

Hmmm, I thought it did tell you when you needed to reboot. Perhaps I am mistaken. In any case, that's pretty rare that you need to reboot. But to answer your question, yes it is possible to modify Update Manager. The source code is readily available, and if you want to make modifications that the mint developers don't plan to do, you can always do it yourself.

I run updates right after boot and have never rebooted unless directed to, Can't remember if that's ever been the case but in any case I've not had any issues.

Good idea. Hopefully the Mint developers will implement it. :)

So are you saying that if a reboot is necessary for an update to take effect no message is given stating that?

I think not, no. I haven't checked lately, but after installing a "kernel update" (i.e. a new kernel) I don't recall getting such a message.

I agree, as long as it is a passive reminder. I usually reboot after installing critical system updates but these might not be recognized as such by some (esp. new) users.

Just putting this out there, if you use Cairo-Dock, it will inform you when a reboot is necessary after an update. Its one of the really nice features that Cairo-Dock has :D
