Flatpak - improvement requests for Mint Software Manager

Post by earthlingkc »

Nice to see Mint 18.3 support Flatpak in Software Manager as Flatpak tends to keep up with latest versions before other repositories. Now LibreOffice can be updated to most recent without having to do manual upgrades, though it does launch more slowly given the nature of separate libraries.

Would like to see Mint Software Manager improve Flatpak features such as...

- Sort by name, most recent in the Flatpak category
- Search just Flatpak repository, not entire repository
- Have a setting to prefer Flatpak package over Ubuntu/Debian repositories

Good suggestions... also:
-A way to text search flatpaks and only flatpaks.
-Categories for flatpaks. This would need to be supported by the remotes.

Just a reminder. Making suggestions here is pretty much making them into the void :) If you can give well thought out feature requests, you should do so here: https://github.com/linuxmint/mintinstall/issues

At least someone who can actually consider them will see it.
When I give opinions, they are my own. Not necessarily those of any other Linux Mint developer or the Linux Mint project as a whole.

Thanks Joseph. Personally I think this could do with being clarified. Perhaps the forum could be renamed in a way that better implies it's not an official suggestion portal and a sticky could be added, otherwise this misperception will persist. Ideally people would be funnelled to discuss ideas here and develop/weed out bad ones via community feedback before posting on Github. There's also https://community.linuxmint.com/idea which is yet another portal. Basically this could do with rationalising/clarifying to make it easier for both users and the dev team.

@MintBean I agree. Devs rarely come here. I'm here at times but sometimes go quite a bit of time without visiting. To be frank, I wouldn't bother with the ideas thing on the community site either. Not sure anyone looks at that anymore. I would expect there will be some changes to where people get pointed and how this is handled at some point.

I completely support your suggestions! When I attempted to install LibreOffice as a Flatpak I was surprised that I had to scroll up and down and actually look for it since there was no way to sort in alphabetical order or to search among the flatpaks.

Totally support this.
We need better searching options in Software Manager.

I'd also take care of the Flatpak update process (Of Flatpak applications).
Now it is done behind the scene with no user interaction.

I would like to see it integrated in Update Manager.

100% agree that Flatpak updates should be integrated in the Software Manager.
The problem with the default behaviour is that the "mintinstall-update-flatpak" script which run automatically 20 minutes after startup, will ask for sudo password from times to times and the casual user have no idea why, no idea that's it's the flatpak updater which ask this, and no idea which flatpak will be updated.

Sorry, I think that Flatpak updates should be integrated in the Update Manager (not in the software manager).

Not necessary, once installed flatpaks are updated in the background. You shouldn't be getting prompted for the password though, that's abnormal.

I suggest you open a new thread for assistance with that.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.
