Suggestion for the panel applets on Linux Mint Cinnamon Main Edition

Post by orschiro »

Dear all,

I love the overall design of the 18.3 Cinnamon Main Edition.

Well done!

Just one suggestion:

I found the default arrangement of the tray icons somewhat confusing and not in line with other distros and even the Linux Mint MATE edition.

- Why is the sound icon the one in the far right corner?
- Shouldn't the person icon be where the sound icon resides?
- On a related note, all features that the person icon provides can also be found in the general menu. Hence, do we really need this icon?
- I understand it's simple, but don't most users appreciate to see the date besides the time only by default?

Thank you for taking my feedback into account!

Robert

If you go into panel edit mode (right click on panel > panel edit) you can re-arrange the icons in any order you wish to include removing unwanted icons.

Thank you. I know that I can do that. My intention here was to discuss potential changes to future version and their default settings.

What you name in the starting post are not content of the tray, but stand-alone applets in the panel. That means, that you can move them to another place in the panel, as you like it. It will definitely be impossible to find an arrangement, which will be OK for every user, the pre-defined arrangement is a suggestion.

You can also remove applets, which you do not want, e. g. the user applet. And some applets are configurable, like the date applet. Showing the date besides the time is obviously more space consuming; user, who stay with only one panel might get a problem with the window list applet, if the date would also be shown.

These are my suggestions:

- I believe it looks more consistent if the sound icon is moved to the left of the time/date to have all icons together.
- Remove the user/people icon as all functions are covered by the "Menu".
- Use the new free space to display the date
