Don't use nvidia-prime as provided in Ubuntu 18.04 in Mint 19

Post by cantfind »

The nvidia-prime provided in Ubuntu 18.04 (0.8.8) is hopelessly broken.

Even when it works as intended, it now requires a full restart to switch between intel and the nvidia GPUs (as opposed to a simple login\logout), and on top of that there are many reports of people for whom it doesn't even work correctly.

For some reason the newer version doesn't use bbswitch to switch between the GPUs.

There's an alternative service, which can be approved upon, which achieves the previous behaviour here.

I suggest you either use version 0.8.6 of nvidia-prime (the one provided in 17.10) or use something based on the above mentioned service.
