File Undeleter

Post by gh4wi »

On Mint, there is a need for a File Undeleter Tool.
But with so many different partition formats, it is too much for any one developer to handle.
Ext2, lvm2pv, & crypt-links appear to be the most common on my Mint PC's.

The detection of deleted inodes is something beyond most programmers & needs gurus.
So, how about all you smart folks starting a project to create a File Undeleter Tool ?
Consider using Ashampoo.com Undeleter for Windows as an example of what users need.

I don't think so,

I always move things to Trash and let it jel for a while.

if I haven't needed anything for a few weeks, I empty the trash.

Not all programs move files to the Trash bin.
Most just delete them, so the user has no way to recover deleted files.
Thus Mint needs an undeleter tool.

"not all programs move files to the trash bin"
I believe in linux Mint the default file manager behavior is DELETE = DELETE, NOT "move to trash".
Disclaimer; I have not tried all DEs or file managers, so they may be different....
You have not provided a inxi -Fxz profile for anyone to help you, so with variables...
If you want trash bin to be an option, then "something like..., works in Mate anyway?" FILE MANAGER > EDIT > PREFERENCES > BEHAVIOR and remove the tick from bypass trash. Then you will have the option to "move to trash" when deleting.

As far as "undelete" goes, there are probably more forensic tools available in Linux than anywhere else.
Just a couple are:
testdisk
photorec
extundelete
and I just learned today..."QUOTE ME: looks awesome, but haven't tried yet"
R-Linux

Really best not to delete stuff you might need (I have no Trash Bin,and prefer the del = del) But if you do, linux is there to help, and I have used testdisk once to restore a few .IMG files from a SD card, NOT MINE, and was successful.

Linux is awesome, best of luck

Re: File Undeleter --Photorec?

Have you tried photorec? I think it is in the repos.
Pretty sure it works on any ext{234} and also FAT.
