Dark or Night mode for this forum
I'm not sure where this will fit & I can't find the solution either. Is there a dark or night mode view for this forum? That light green and white are just too bright for my room. I know I can have firefox extension that toggles the light but prefer to have native control within the forum itself.
Intel Pentium E5800, Biostar G31M+ v6.1, Kingston 2x2GB DDR2-800, Galaxy GeForce GT440, Crucial M4-CT128 SSD, D-Link DFE-520TX (Rhine-III rev 8b), RT5370 WiFi, Corsair VS550, Aigo Blade 2, Dell E190S, Linux Mint 19 Mate
Re: Dark or Night mode for this forum
There's no such option at the moment, sorry. It would require adding or creating a new style (theme) for the board.
I gathered some input on this 2 years ago but it didn't reach a conclusion or draw wide interest: viewtopic.php?f=60&t=234487. For our own style I know how to keep it up to date with phpBB releases but community created styles can lag (far) behind phpBB releases and that risks breaking them when I upgrade the board. I've been hesitant to add any styles I'm not comfortable maintaining myself for that reason.
I'm not an artist so perhaps there could be some consensus on what makes a good dark style for people with vision impairment and perhaps somebody could step up to convert our style to use those colors, not changing anything else in the style. That way I could maintain it alongside our current style. Or a community created style could be selected, with the understanding that it can break at any moment.
Here are demos of dark styles that will work with our current phpBB version:
Realistically I think a browser extension is the way to go though. None of the above look very "minty".

Re: Dark or Night mode for this forum
in the "stores" for chromium based browsers such as chromium, brave, slimjet, or google chrome browsers, there is an extension called "Night Mode Pro"...you can manually toggle back and forth between day and night...also you can use the gradient control to allow just the amount of brightness you need...i set mine at 75%...just make sure in the "options" setting that you untick the notification box as it is bothersome everytime it updates itself...in that options setting, there are the first seven boxes to either tick or untick...i have the first three ticked...the forth one which is the "notifications is unticked...then the next three are ticked and i leave it at that...it works perfectly.

I found something similar in the add-ons for Waterfox, possibly also for Firefox: Dark Night Mode. Here's a screenshot taken while using it.
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!
Re: Dark or Night mode for this forum
I really like the ne-darkgreen (link in xenopeeks reply). Sort of reminds me of dark chocolate mint . .

HI skylinestar,
I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.
There are some system-wide options for night mode or day mode like "redshift" which may already be installed that you might consider as well.

Re: Dark or Night mode for this forum
In Firefox I use night light add-on. It puts a small icon in the menu area and just a clk and it toggles between day and night mode.

Re: Dark or Night mode for this forum
brilliant idea, thanks for starting topic skylinestar!
my thoughts, +1 and yes! for adding this option to forum.
@Moem, I like that darknightmode! but see that is only for chrome. They mention in faqs it can be modified to work in firefox "but it is complicated", lol, at least their honest about that You mentioned waterfox, do you have link to where/how you got this extension for waterfox?
edit to add: It seems thier website faqs need to be updated, a quick search in firefox addons answered my question, very cool and thanks for the tip!
@Spearmint2, thanks for mentioning that FF extension, I will give it a try as well! (but still would prefer it to be a forum option)
which leads to xenopeek's offer to poll further if enough interest is generated (yes! please), my feedback on options listed:
AcidTech- nice blue on black contrast, I like!
Acieeed- CAUTION!... this is not one I would use, I'd hear all those smiling faces whispering to me in the dark, lol (not)
Carbon- nice greys, white text looks very clear and clean, I'd try it
Hexagon- not a fan of this orange
HexagonReborn- still not a fan
ne-blackgreen- I'm with richyrich on this one! dark chocolate mint (florescent even!:), great orange highlights this would be my daily driver.
pycode- another decent grey, although unlike Carbon, the white text is muted and harder to see clearly with the grey background.
one thing I found distracting on all of those dark forum option choices is the torn look white border around smilies, could be a local issue though and it is not enough to override my desire for a dark theme because current options are quite blinding at times...

For FF I like the 'Dark Reader' Extension.
I have tried others but this works best for me.

Seems you're lucky to not have any problems with your eyesight.
I find dark modes very helpful when you have vision problems.
I have an overall dark theme for my desktop (vertex-dark), use stylus on Firefox with Midnight-Surfing Alternative theme.

Re: Dark or Night mode for this forum
Interesting. Personally I find black on white much more relaxing to read than the inverse, but I guess everybody's eyes are different. The exception for me is writing code, for that I prefer a dark background, but I think that's mostly because the syntax colouring is better that way.

Re: Dark or Night mode for this forum
Sorry for necrobumping, but there is a new style called prosilver dark edition, which could be considered. On a side note, I'm on another distro right now and their forum has a great dark theme. Since prosilver minty is already here, the dark edition shouldn't probably be much difficult to implement.xenopeek wrote: ⤴Sun Nov 11, 2018 6:07 am There's no such option at the moment, sorry. Hardware problems on LMDE? Solution:
sudo apt-get install -t buster-backports linux-image-amd64 firmware-linux firmware-misc-nonfree
To use a version of LMDE after EOL, replace mint's Firefox with debian's one

Please is there any dark theme ?
Hi there,
first thank you very much for your hard work that helps lot of people with older hardware. And helps the world not to create another TON of artificially created "obsolete hardware" garbage as does the Google, Microsoft, Apple and all the hardware manufacture companies try to persuade us. That we need to upgrade every year, even our HW can still work perfectly well.
Q: is there any dark theme in the forum settings ? couldn't find any and since it's end of 2023 , it would be nice to have an option to save eyes when reading the forums. Thank you very much.
anyway thank you for your hard work

Just some stupid Linux n00b, waste of time and waste of space. Can't learn properly, is too slow in the head. Too stupid to understand, and too damaged to learn.

Re: Dark or Night mode for this forum
There is no dark style on the forum. We have our own green minty style and the official phpBB blue prosilver style. You can change your board style here: ucp.php?i=165Linux_n00b wrote: ⤴Sat Dec 30, 2023 4:04 pm Q: is there any dark theme in the forum settings ? couldn't find any and since it's end of 2023 , it would be nice to have an option to save eyes when reading the forums.
It means more maintenance work for me each phpBB update if we add more styles. And using a 3rd party style would block updating phpBB until that style is patched to work with the new phpBB version, which I'm not willing to risk given how often styles go unmaintained. And I'm not a style developer so I also don't want to be the one that ends up having to patch the 3rd party style That's much more complex then our own minty style, which I optimized specifically to be as easy as possible to patch for new phpBB versions.
I might consider adding a dark style if the community is okay that I'm not going to hold back a phpBB update for it, that the dark style would simply be removed if it's not patched very shortly after a new phpBB release.
Adding a dark style has come up several times over the years but I don't think a consensus was reached on which single dark style the members preferred. You can take a look at available styles here: https://www.phpbb.com/community/db/styl ... les-12/3.3. If you go to a style there is a "demo" tab there you can click to get a live demo of that style. Only styles for phpBB 3.3.11 need to be considered.
There are browser extensions that let you use your own style with a website. Somebody earlier made their own style for the forums that is still geen like minty but darker: viewtopic.php?p=2114501#p2114501. I don't know if it still works and I don't use such browser extensions so can't tell you much more about it.
