A Charity Wing to Mint

Post by golddigger »

A lot of companies setup a charity wing to their organisation.
This can achieve many things. Publicity, helping others, and publicity. Did I mention, publicity?

A lot of TV companies and organisations will give publicity to worthy charities. It doesnt take
much imagination to think how, for very little cost, you can help better the lives of others
with computer resources, or knowledge, or other related aspects of the IT world.
There are people with specialised knowledge of how to promote a charity and therefore
promote the charities parent company.
Perhaps it sounds slightly cynical, and I know it can sound that way, but I dont mean it to,
because all you have to do is to do the best you can to help others and the publicity will follow,
because people really do believe, and rightly so, that one good turn deserves another

Actually, open-source software development itself is already a kind of charity: "Share and Share Alike" is its motto.... The code you write under the GPL, is being shared freely with everybody. All mankind benefits; it's a gift to the world.

It's the difference between copyright and copyleft:

very true. I did think about that but in a way merely writing code for free to benefit users of an operating system isnt quite
what most people have in mind as charity. I mean, imagine if those same people each donated a computer to schools where
a computer would be the most valuable thing the school ever owned. In Europe a computer costs so little that you can get
the best for less than a months wages. In some places that same computer would cost 5 years wages
Imagine now, mint doing a deal with a charity that sends computers to economically poor countries to put mint on the computers
the publicity alone would be worth it

Do you practice what you are preaching, i.e. are you an open source developer giving their product away for free and then spending your own money on charity to promote it? Or is this something that you think other people should do?

WOW, and OK considering what some companies charge for their OS, and indeed even some individual programs / packages.
I am very curious what you, and "most people" would call it, if not charity ?

I for one do consider it a charity, and am VERY thankful for things like GIMP, LO, and Linux as a whole.
The talented, and generous people who create this stuff get little enough recognition for their efforts...and then there are posts like this. :(

I happen to think it's a great idea, and you should start right away.

I wouldn't call it "a charity", but I would say it contains charitable characteristics.
Also, I wouldn't assume computer technology is something that's considered "novel" anymore, even in developing countries.
Access to broadband networks and online services is a more intriguing aspect.

Not really, it's the responses that will be seemingly cynical. We often have posters coming up with ideas but they all fall flat at one question: What is there to prevent you from doing it?

This is a user forum where users of Linux Mint help other users of Linux Mint, so if you have a good idea, the intent is that you pursue it, not someone else. That said, I don't know if it's your intention to have someone else do it, but if it is, it's not going anywhere.

Someone has to do it.
I used to try doing it at one time, but was always misinterpreted as to my intent and phrasiology...American style English language usage tends to lend itself to this conclusion from others where no slights were ever intended but were taken that way...I will just enjoy your way of doing so...im mostly just reading these days, not offering much in the way of help any longer...DAMIEN

I've come across more than a few "Why isn't anyone acting on these great propositions I've put forward? I demand action!" on these forums...

You just gotta roll your eyes and chuckle.
