Libre Office Freezing Issues

Post by thebabylonrd »

Linux mint suddenly has tons of issues. The disk drive opens up during the boot process every time. The system hangs, corrupts documents, and simple programs freeze persistently. No recent hardware or BIOS changes. Windows runs fine. My motherboard is MSI MPG B550 gaming plus.

Sorry you are having problems but if you provide some more information I feel certain someone will be able to help. I notice that you have only just joined the Forum, but give no indication how long you have been suing Linux Mint.

For a start, open your Terminal and enter the command inxi -Fxxzrd
and then copy and paste the output into your reply between the <-> icons.

Having done that, Forum members will possibly be able to suggest some solutions. However, they may request that you use a different post for each one.

Reason: Parameters of inxi command corrected to a version that will filter out personal details.

With so many problems and among them corrupted documents you only have two choices unless you want to spend days for resolving issues one by one. The first one as you already told yourself is to remove linux mint. The second one if you have a backup is to reinstall and do not update anything else except firefox, thunderbird and whatever other app you use to be connected to the internet. Comparing to windows even without updates you will still be much safer.

Welcome to the forum, thebabylonrd.

The disk drive issue is a known bug and, if I recall correctly, others have gone back to using the 5.4.0-81 kernel until the issue is fixed.

The issues you mention sound like you may not be using the best kernel for your hardware.

Please consider posting a thread in the Beginner Questions section of the forum (since you mention a variety of issues) so others may provide help which may clear those issues.

Section 5 of READ: How To Get Help! explains the data we need to be able to help you. Please provide that system data in your first post in the thread.

Hi Moem!

Thank you for editing my Terminal command. Have made a note not to make the same error again.

Can you boot with a LM bootable thumb drive? If so can you reinstall LM.

If you can boot and run Mint from a USB without issue, then it could be a hardware issue. You could also have a corrupt iso on the usb, did you check the hash of the iso you downloaded?

Thanks for all the replys. I didnt know how else to ask these specifics but joining the forums. ive been using linux mint for about 6 months. Windows is used only for occasional gaming and linux mint is my go to for everything else. My system has 2 kernals ; Windows10 and Linux mint. I hope im stumbling through the rules and regulations in the right direction.

Heres my terminal output:

I can boot Kali linux from a thumbdrive or I could write Linux mint to a thumbdrive too.

The system feels like its running out of bandwidth. Gets clunky and unresponsive sometimes. At this time I am using LM without this issue (besides the disk drive, that always happens)

5000 series Ryzen needs a newer kernel than the 5.4.

Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Let us know how the newer kernel works for you.

The issue seems to be related to the storage system. Bringing up or looking for certain files causes the system to freeze.

Please try the newer kernel. The cpu is involved when accessing the File Manager app and the drives it accesses.

Good news! The recent kernel update has me booting up without cycling the optical drive! The programs that were freezing were all Libre Office programs that i was using to write documents. Its starting to look like it may be a problem localized to either the storage/file system or the Libre office programs. Thanks for all of your help. I saved a copy of the corrupted file to my phone but when trying to view it on my computer, it also freezes the Libre office programs or throughs error when trying to read it with other programs.

UPDATE Libre office writer freezes when trying to start a new document. It definately seems like the problem may be localized there. Being separate from the kernel issue related to the optical drive.

Thankyou all for being patient

I just updated to LibreOffice 7.2 from their site with their instructions and it went very smoothly. Everything seems to work fine, I haven't had a chance to test each component but it looks good.

Well, false alarm with the new kernel fixing the optical drive opening up problem. The first boot it didnt, but it does every single boot now. The libre office programs still freeze. It may be time that I try another distro.

sorry for so many replies I just saw this. I see the new kernels now. I honestly didnt know that it was updating my outdated kernels to another outdated kernel?

EDIT: New kernel 5.11.0-36-generic. installed and booted. But nothing fixed yet. optical drive still opens, this is more annoying than a problem. Il move on to The Libre office Repos for updates and hope that the more experienced minds than mine arent out of ammo to fire at this lump of HW

The 5.4 kernel is not an outdated kernel. It is the LTS kernel and supported until April 2025.

However, your hardware came out right around or after that kernel did, so that kernel does not have the optimizations that work best for your specific hardware. That's why the newer kernel may give better performance.

There are several long threads on the forum as this issue is affecting many people. Hopefully, a fix will be released in the near future.
