Support for file (& data) sharing in the Desktop Environments?

Post by ilwegesk »

Hi! While sharing a picture on my (Android) mobile I recently wondered that I miss this very generic sharing functionality on the desktop. Is this something that is available and I missed? Actually, I would expect that modern desktop environments like Cinnamon & Gnome & KDE do offer a generic way of sharing files of different types with the possibility for applications to subscribe to specific file types / pattern they can receive to be listed in a generic sharing dialogue.
Actually this could / should be build on top of the file manager's "open with" functionality, right?

Firefox has a "send link" (via email) feature. But as I also use messengers (such as Signal) on the desktop, it would be quite natural to have this kind of sharing also supported. Also for web apps such as WhatsApp Web.

Is this anything anybody started thinking about already?
