LMDE Xfce

Post by half-word »

Well, I'd love to see LMDE Xfce Edition again!

I used to use the first LMDE that way and thought it would be my primary distro for the foreseeable future. I was very disappointed when LMDE 2 got out and I realised I can't really upgrade.

Yeah, I mean I have a relative that uses an old netbook PC with a 32 bit processor. It currently runs Mint 19.3, but that will be unsupported from April next year. The thing is that Debian supports 32 bit, but the Cinammon version would probably be too heavy for it. If there was an Xfce version it would be a relief.Without it, I'm not sure there are many viable options. I know people will say "just buy a better machine" but the person who uses it is tight with money and isn't very good with computing anyway. Mint is the most hassle free option, so it would make my life easier loading it on their computer!

You never know for sure before actually installing the os.
The wahoo about Cinnamon resource intensity is mostly exaggerated.
Specs on that machine or model# please?

So far I haven't perceived Cinnamon, even though it's quite cool looking, as being particularly resource-heavy either. I have installed LM Cinnamon on several older machines for friends and familiy and I'm quite satisfied with its performance.

I prefer Xfce just because I'm very familiar with it and because I usually just reuse its settings present in my home directory (in the separate /home partition I always insist on having).

It has an Intel Atom processor, I think it's something like an N270. It has 1.5gb ram. It runs 19.3 well enough with the xfce version. I doubt the Cinammon debian version would run anywhere near as well as that...
