Feedback on 20.3 -> 21.1 upgrade (gcc < 12 vs 5.19 kernel)

Post by Kriby »

Ran into an issue during my upgrade, where mintupgrade (5.8.4, newest according to all repos I could access including official) installed a gcc version below gcc-12, but also only installed 5.19 kernels, so that when my nvidia drivers attempted to compile dkms against the kernel, it could not. I became aware of this problem after reboot when no graphical interface of any kind booted up. Attempting to restart lightdm through another teletype resulted in an error message regarding the missing nvidia kernel module, and I was able to figure things out from there. Debugging this was somewhat frustrated by a repeating refocus to tty7 from what I suppose was lightdm repeatedly trying to restart itself.
