Tested on LM 18.3 xfce & LM 17.3 xfce
This procedure gives you the more capable shutter program.
It also gives you 'ctrl printscreen' to capture the current window and 'printscreen' to capture the entire screen.
Install screenshot program 'shutter' and configure it:
Add shutter PPA (only for LM 17.3 because the latest shutter is not in the repo)
Add package 'libgoo-canvas-perl' (gives you the 'Edit' button)
(on LM 18.3 xfce it does not appear in the software manager, but it works from 'apt-get install...'
Inside shutter:
Edit -> Preferences ->
Main ->
Automatically save file: %Y-%m-%d_%NNN
Behavior ->
Uncheck 'Present main window after taking a screenshot'
LM17 or LM18 Menu -> keyboard -> Application shortcuts -> Add:
Shortcut: CTRL PRINT Command: shutter --active --exit_after_capture
Shortcut: PRINT Command: shutter --full --exit_after_capture
Remove:
Shortcut: PRINT Command: xfce-screenshooter

Simply narrowing it down to the platform I tested on which was Linux Mint 18.3 XFCE .Is LM 18.3 xfce something different to Mint 18.3?
It will probably work on other platforms too, but I like to specify the one that I used.
The names of the menu items will probably change if using mate or cinnamon.
