tenfoot see Joefootball's reply to the same query I had as you further up in the thread.
Execute sudo apt update prior to executing the install command.
Oh, yes. I constantly forget about that because my apt does it automatically. Thank you.

Thank you or your prompt response.

That did the trick. Now to make the alterations.

I really must read the WHOLE thread before I dive in :-)

We all make those mistakes. I'm just glad you've found it useful.

The standard Firefox has broken security ............
Thank you for alerting me to this thread.

I've also checked my TOR and Chromium browsers which seem to have the same issue.

Is there a browser which addresses these issues "out of the box"?

Not that I'm aware of, sorry.

I would supply this tut to this this tutorial. It's an explanation about installing stubby independently because at this way it is possible for users of LM version 19 too: Configure DNS over TLS on Linux Mint to Protect DNS Privacy

This is a popular and good tutorial usually linked too for stubby setup. Still it leaves out a thing or two. For all interested I described a year ago the installation of DOT in this comment: Setting up DNS over TLS Still to move it in a separate post maybe.

Serious question: why should I use Firefox ESR? What could happen if I don't fix the security leaks in my regular Firefox?

It's about securing your privacy online from prying eyes, like those belonging to your ISP. What you make of that statement is entirely up to you. In addition, there is more than enough information in the original post for you to have figured that out for yourself, to wit "If you want to learn more, click the Learn More... link below each security feature on the Cloudflare ESNI page."

Like Pasada experienced Firefox-esr couldn't install (despite your comprehensive explanation):

Hi Kadaitcha man. I am getting this error message on install -

Code: Select all

sudo apt install firefox-esr stubby
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package firefox-esr is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'firefox-esr' has no installation candidate
I had unfortunately the same experience.

What I discovered is that only adding the respository ppa:mozillateam/ppa is not enough, adding the respository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa is necessary too to be able to install firefox-esr.

Would you add this info to your first post so this post can be deleted?

Thanks. I've added the line. I was subscribed to that ppa before I started this exercise so I missed it as being required.

I quoted your entire post to defeat your desire to have it deleted

I found that this works much better:

Next, go to about:config in Firefox ESR and type network.security.esni.enabled in the search box. Set network.security.esni.enabled to true by double-clicking false, then close your browser.

When I tried searching with just esni I couldn't find it, searching for network.security.esni.enabled brought it right up.
Someday, maybe I'll figure out exactly what the hell I'm doing.

I'm very new to Linux - I just stumbled upon this :) I've followed the instructions provided and have double checked everything. For whatever reason I cannot get a green checkmark on the last item (Secure SNI)?? I'm really baffled as to what I've done wrong.

Thanks in advance for assistance!!

As stated above in red Please don't add support questions to tutorials, start your own topic in the appropriate sub-forum instead. Moreover regretfully the author of this tutorial Kadaitcha Man was not active last five months.
Still you can test if your setup supports SNI here:

You will see this banner if it is OK, otherwise please start a new topic:
