How to Install GRUB 2.00 in Linux Mint 13 (Maya)

Post by Brahim Salem » Mon Apr 29, 2013 10:40 am

If you don’t already know, GRUB 2.00 is the default grub on Linux Mint 14 (Nadia). It's more advanced and gives you a cleaner grub menu with fewer entries.

If you wish to upgrade your Mint, then follow this tutorial:

1-What's GRUB?

GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader) is the program that helps boot up your computer when you turn it on. Without it, you wouldn’t be able to load Linux Mint.
So, it’s very important that you know what do to in case something goes wrong before upgrading it. The least make will render your computer inoperable.

2- Installation:

I-To install from PPA:

In this tutorial we will see how to upgrade/install GRUB 2.00 from PPA on a system running Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) and Linux Mint 13. Installing from PPA will be easier than installing manually from source because you may get unresolved errors. This latest version brings more improvements, bug fixes and corrections.

Installation

Open the terminal and run these commands:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cjwatson/grub
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install grub2
Update now the GRUB2 boot loader with this command:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub2
You can now verify your current grub2 version with this command:

Code: Select all

grub-install -v
Outputs returned for Ubuntu 12.04:

Code: Select all

grub-install (GRUB) 2.00-2ubuntu1~ppa2~precise
For any bug encountered, you can report it at https://bugs.launchpad.net/~cjwatson

II-Manual installation:

To get started press Ctrl – Alt – T on your keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the commands below to download the newest version of GRUB:

Code: Select all

wget -O- ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/grub/grub-2.00.tar.xz | tar -xJ
Next, change into grup-2.00/ directory by running the command below:

Code: Select all

cd grup-2.00/
Then while in that directory, install these two packages:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install bison flex
Next, run the command below to begin building GRUB installation environment:

Code: Select all

sudo ./configure --prefix=/usr
Next, run the command below to build GRUB 2.00:

Code: Select all

sudo make
After that, run the commands below:

Code: Select all

sudo make install
Next, install GRUB 2.00 on the partition it should be installed on. This is VERY IMPORTANT. If you don’t know, read this blog post first before continuing at http://www.liberiangeek.net/2012/07/how ... in-ubuntu/

When you’re ready, install GRUB onto the partition that you know it should be installed on:

Code: Select all

sudo grub-install /dev/xxx

Finally, update grub by running the commands below:
