Re: [TUTORIAL] Installing Mint on a Windows 8/8.1/10 Computer
I followed the tutorials to the dot in trying to set up a Windows 8.1/Linux Mint MATE 18 dual boot for a SONY Vaio all-in-one computer without success. The LM installation went through without any problem, but the computer directly boots into Windows without showing the grub menu. I also tried to do boot-repair which gave this URL http://paste2.org/w0jCH6c6 which records all the details about the computer. Hope this helps one figure out what is the problem of the dual install.
I have disabled Windows 8.1 fast startup. Still no success.
I noticed one thing which is a bit odd... While installing LM8, I pick the custom install which allows me to view the partitions. I saw two windows boot manager partitions: sda1 and sda3. sda3 shows that it is fully used while sda1 still have unused space -- I picked sda1 as the boot device. No success. Show I remove one partition? Which one to remove?

Re: [TUTORIAL] Installing Mint on a Windows 8/8.1/10 Computer
Hi,
I have a Mint 18.1 setup and was thinking of dual booting Windows 10 in order to run some software I'm interested in (and won't run under wine). At any rate, it seems most tutorials cover adding linux to a windows installation, not the other way around. Although, an earlier reply suggested its possible with some fiddling. I was wondering if anyone knew of a tutorial that may cover some of that fiddling. I was just going to put windows on a 60GB SSD I'm not using and editing grub to see it, but that seems overly simplistic. Anyway, any direction or pointers would be great.
Thanks!

Re: [TUTORIAL] Installing Mint on a Windows 8/8.1/10 Computer
You have the best approach. Put windows onto a different drive and then run update grub program to add it. Other option would be running windows under linux in a Virtual Box, but if you change one thing in VBox settings after installing it, the windows system will fail for activation.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

Ok, thanks. I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
Re: [TUTORIAL] Successful installation in new ASUS laptop alongside WIndows 10
After a few days investigating how to get linux mint installed in a new laptop I ran into this post. The solution worked for me without problems.
Notes:
* Shrinked 2 volumes in windows 10 (one in the ssd, one in the hdd)
* I partitioned the drives through the Linux Mint installer (I didn't use GParted)
* Placed root in the ssd
* Placed /home in the hdd
* Placed swap in the hdd
* Disabled Secure boot in the BIOS.
* Booted windows and performed a shutdown ("Shutdown /s /t 0" in the command prompt)

Re: [TUTORIAL] Installing Mint on a Windows 8/8.1/10 Computer
Thanks gold_finger for the tutorial. I was active with MS up until XP, which is when I discovered Ubuntu & Mint so the tutorial was a great reference & help.
I just installed Mint 18.2 on my 84 year old Aunt's Dell Laptop 15-5000 with no problems at all by following your well written tutorial.
The only thing I could add is that using windows to shrink the MS System I could only shrink it by 50%, which was OK, the drive was 1 TB so I had half of that available.

Here is info:

Re: [TUTORIAL] Installing Mint on a Windows 8/8.1 Computer
[quote="crisparmour"]Mint 17.1 and Windows 8.1 dual boot on Acer Aspire ES1-512
I'd like to add my thanks to the long list and to add a bit of specific info. I just got my first Windows computer since abandoning XP for Mint in 2008.
It's a laptop for my wife who is a technophobic teacher who needs Windows to run educational resources.
The laptop is an Acer ES1-512. I took a bit of a chance on this because I have seen a lot of tales of struggle with Acer laptops running Linux and W8.1. Posts like this on forums gave me the confidence to have a go. In the end I have had to scratch around to overcome some difficulties but as I write I have the system running the way I want it. This model does have a few peculiarities in the BIOS but more later. Dreading the usual run of Windows infections and reinstallation I wasn't going to let my beloved loose on the laptop until I got a proper OS alongside the Windows junk. So I took a deep breath and worked on it all afternoon.
I SWEAR TO GOD MAN YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!!
I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS FOR DAYS LEARNED SO MUCH AND WOULD HAVE NEVER FIGURED ALL THIS OUT PROBABLY YOU ARE AWESOME!

NVM: confused secure boot with EUFI....
Re: [TUTORIAL] Installing Mint on a Windows 8/8.1/10 Computer
Good Information but I am working with Win 7 Legacy and it does not have secure boot. Also I can install Mint 19 Tessa on a separate hard drive or side by side with Win 7, no problem. The problem is that when I start my computer up and select Mint 19 drive, Fast Boot does not recognize it and defaults to Win 7 start.

Goldfinger,
I appreciate the time, and effort, in preparing the tutorial. I am getting prepared information prepared beforehand in order to change my acer laptop windows 7 to Linux Mint 19 and the tutorial is invaluable.
Thanks.

Turn off "Fast Boot". It's just a hibernate file anyway.Berk wrote: ⤴Fri Jan 04, 2019 9:44 am Good Information but I am working with Win 7 Legacy and it does not have secure boot. All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....
Re: [TUTORIAL] Installing Mint on a Windows 8/8.1/10 Computer
I have some suggestions for who wants make dual boot...
Steps:
Steps:
- Disable secure boot (I kept secure boot mode to audit), disable PTT
- After you boot your PC, In General->boot sequence -> boot list options-> select UEFI-> add boot option-> Give a name for the boot option (eg USB Ubuntu Boot)-> direct file name to BOOT/EFI/grubx64 in USB
- Set the Boot Sequence (1st entry) to to the one you made, save and restart

Re: [TUTORIAL] Installing Mint on a Windows 8/8.1/10 Computer
i'm just here to say thanks and share the information requested after a semi-successful installation of mint plus windows 10 on my dell xps 13
the reason why was not fully successful is that I messed up the installation by formating the EFI partition because I did not read this tutorial before I started.
hopefully, I will be able to fix that
