Fix duplicate menu entries on MATE 17.2 upgraded from 17.1

Post by xenopeek » Thu Jul 16, 2015 11:21 am

If you upgraded your Linux Mint 17.1 MATE installation to 17.2 you may have noticed you now have a few duplicate menu entries. This is caused by the upgrade to the new MATE version as MATE 1.10 has obsoleted certain MATE packages in favour of GNOME alternatives. These GNOME alternatives will be automatically installed, but the obsoleted MATE packages aren't automatically removed. So you end up with duplicate menu entries.

You will likely find duplicates for:
  • Calculator in Accessories menu;
  • Network, "Time and Date", and "Users and Groups" in Administration menu;
  • "Time and Date" and "Users and Groups" in Control Center.
To get rid of these duplicates you just have to remove these obsoleted packages:
  • mate-calc and mate-calc-common (replaced by gnome-calculator);
  • mate-system-tools and mate-system-tools-common (replaced by gnome-system-tools)
  • In addition, because it is no longer used by any MATE applications you can also remove mate-dialogs and mate-dialogs-common (replaced by zenity).
Use Software Manager or any other package manager you prefer. Or remove these all in one go with this command:

Code: Select all

apt purge mate-calc mate-calc-common mate-system-tools mate-system-tools-common mate-dialogs mate-dialogs-common
There is only one side-effect to this, namely that the "Shared Folders" menu entry isn't displayed anymore. If you want that in your menu to configure which folders are available for your network neighborhood, you can restore it to your menu easily. Right-click on the menu button and select to edit the menu then go to the Administration section and there mark to enable display of "Shared Folders" (screenshot).

I saw the duplicates entries when I upgraded but didn't take much notice of them. However, having just run your one-liner, I find that I no longer have any calculator menu-entry now! Removing gcalctool & reinstalling it doesn't help either, even after logging out. Neither is it present but unselected via 'Edit Menus', but it is present in the /usr/share/applications folder. Also, there is at least one other duplicate that you haven't mentioned - 'Take Screenshot' (a 'Screenshot' is also present that does the same thing). Same might apply to 'File Management' and 'File Manager', although one may be a carry-over from the Cinnamon desktop.

If this is a Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon installation that you added MATE to and then upgraded to 17.2 then yes you have a different situation. This topic is specifically for Linux Mint 17.1 MATE upgraded to 17.2. Not Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon with MATE added upgraded to 17.2.

It's actually the other way round if that matters - a Mint 17.1/Mate 1.08 installation that had Cinnamon added later, which was then upgraded to Mint 17.2. Guess I'll try and exorcize Cinnamon now that I've got Mate/Compiz working and hope for the best.

Is there a similar fix for duplicate entries in Cinnamon 17.2?

I'm not aware of any duplicate entries for Cinnamon 17.2. Can you give some examples?

Here's a specific example, if I'm looking to open a music file and I right-click on the drop-down menu to open with > other application I see duplicate entries for Banshee, notepad and Wordpad

This thread is about the main menu of Mint (in Mate), what you describe is the context menu of nemo, quite a different thing.

And notepad and Wordpad make me suspect this is a system with Wine? I recommend making a new topic about that as I know nothing of Wine except that it opens your system up to Windows malware and viruses.

I use MATE, in Mint 17.1

Why did MATE do this? Why not renamed them as before for MATE? Or is this not from MATE but from the Mint upgrade other than the MATE portion, which adds them too?
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

The new MATE version packages have new dependencies; they are dependent on packages developed by GNOME, not MATE. The GNOME packages get automatically installed by your package manager when you upgrade to the new MATE version packages to fulfil their dependencies. The obsoleted MATE packages don't get automatically removed because there is no "conflicts" or "replaces" in noted in the GNOME packages. You can have both installed at the same time. The issue is you'll have two entries in your menu for the same thing and eventually the (now unmaintained and unsupported) MATE ones will break.

There's not really anybody at fault I think. The instructions are here as a sticky to help those that want to remove the old stuff.
