several options to install software on Linux Mint (2016)

Post by ynnebbenny » Thu May 05, 2016 1:04 am

Here is an adhoc tutorial showing a few different ways to install software onto Linux Mint.
I'm certainly no expert at this, but I think this video might open the scope of software choices a little more. (For the new user)

Users are free to install whatever they like on their own system, but please be aware that software installed from anywhere other than Mint repos (via Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager) has not been tested on Mint and may break things

if your going to install outside of Mint repos - vet the source closely.

As always, the question is: how?

It will be different for everyone depending upon your criteria. But I tend to not use any package from a little know source.
or I will search the web for comments about a certain package. I tend to accept most from known sources , Debian, ubuntu, etc.
But reject those from unknown third party sources. Also be very careful with ubuntu ppa's most have not been tested well by the Ubuntu team.
Rough criteria I know. but a starting place.. of course if it's in a production environment I stick strictly to repos.

Most of problems are caused by non-ordinary software installations.

Ive had just as many problems using software manager repo installs as outside of it.
Personally, for me its great to discover some amazing software outside of the repos.
To me its the difference from driving a 4 cylinder to driving a turbo.
I'm yet to have a catastrophic failure and I test a lot of stuff.

If your the cautious type you can always load a version of Mint into Virtual box and test out stuff that way.
