This Guide is intended for MFDs that use Epson's Image Scan! for Linux program and does not apply to users of Image Scan v3.
First, install "iscan-network-nt" from the Epson Download Centre (this comes as part of the Scanner Download Bundle). To enable Wi-Fi for Epson devices you have to edit two configuration files on your system - dll.conf and epkowa.conf.
sudo nano /etc/sane.d/dll.conf
Observing the alphabetical order, insert the following 2 entries:
net
epkowa
Ctrl+x to exit nano - follow the prompts to save.
Then,
sudo nano /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf
after the listing of
usb
scsi
add
net - followed by the IP address of your device followed by (say) 1865
leave a space between net and the IP code as well as before 1865.
Assuming that you have enabled Wi-Fi in your Epson device, activating a "check report" of your network connection will tell you the IP address of your Epson unit.
This enables wi-fi for iscan, simple scan and Xsane in Linux Mint 18.

Hi steveclement913,
I am a total newbie and I too had difficulty installing the scanner with both Simple Scan and Xsane until i read your note about the firewall. I then switched the firewall OFF and my scanner worked with both Simple Scan and Xsane software packages, so thank you.
I had difficulty also installing my printer and found the following video helpful. I hope it solves your problem too:

Re: Enable Wi-Fi connection for Epson Printers and Scanners
Bonjour kyphi,
I get the same issue about the WIFI connection for my Epson printers (XP-325).
I have done what you have proposed. That works!...I can scan, now.
Thank you a lot, Kyphi
Best Regards,
Le Loup

Thankyou, this worked for me at last after losing my scanner when I upgraded to Mint 19
