[mint 18 cinnamon] How to hide/unhide the mess on your desktop

Post by hannibalsmith » Mon Aug 22, 2016 2:00 pm

Hi,

if like me you have a lot of files/folder on your desktop but also sometimes want to have a clean desktop, this little trick may help you.

create a file anywhere you want in you home folder and name it toggledesktop.sh (or anything you want)

copy/paste this code:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
ETAT=`gsettings get org.nemo.desktop desktop-layout`
if [ "$ETAT" = "'true::true'" ]
then
gsettings set org.nemo.desktop desktop-layout false::false
else
gsettings set org.nemo.desktop desktop-layout true::true
fi
exit 0
close the file and make it executable

go to
menu->preferences->keyboard->shortcuts
create a new shortcut that points to the script (I choose super+H)

each time you press the shortcut, everything on your desktop will appear/disappear

this seems to be completely useless, that's why i can't live without it !

Hi!
Excellent finding. :P
Could you please modify it for MATE version (file manager caja instead of nemo)? :roll:

Thx!

Thank you :D

unfortunatly, I don't have a linux install with mate to play with.

If you can use gsettings to tweak mate, you'll just have to find the right key to modify and the values it can take to adapt the script.
