LinuxMint ~ Command Line ~ Update from 18.2 to 18.3

Post by makh »

Hi

CAUTION:
1. For CLI experienced users only.
2. Perform at your own risk.
3. Backup all important data, on separate disk.
4. Tested only for cinnamon, till now.
5. Dont try this if you are not familiar to CLI.
6. This method is not recommended by the Linux Mint Team.

With some changes to:https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... pgrademint

Log out all GUI sessions.

Go to console:

Code: Select all

Ctrl+Alt+F2
Login as Root.

Check you are connected to the internet:

Code: Select all

ping -c3 linuxmint.com
Change sonya to sylvia in:

Code: Select all

/etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
Execute:

Code: Select all

apt update && apt upgrade -y
Hopefully it will upgrade.

Enjoy
:)

PS: If you see any improvement, please feel free to point it out. If it is helpful, I will/may edit the first post.

Which is why we recommend users to just follow the official upgrade instructions: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3462

That way they don't need to use the terminal or edit files, and if there is a problem with the upgrade they can easily roll back to their previous version. It also let's Update Manager do any prerequisite checks or perform additional upgrade steps (like upgrading GRUB afterwards).

One of two must suffer from deadly boredom, either the Mint team, which provided an upgrade path since 3 years or the OP here. Already 7 years ago Clem covered the question, why the package upgrade (see chapter C2) is problematic. So this here is not only superfluous, but also dis-advised.

BTW: The real question is not, if this "hopefully" upgrades, but if the system runs stable afterwards.

Mind that this was written back when Linux Mint still also used the Ubuntu development releases as package bases. From 18.2 to 18.3 the package base stays the same. So for chapter C2 ignore the first argument as this doesn't apply: "Slow: APT will download the new version of all the packages installed on your system. Using a fresh upgrade you could have downloaded all that data by simply getting the ISO."

Hi

@xenopeek:

Sir! I understand you are more expert in linux and linux mint, then me.

But how to was made, because:
1. If any one who knows his way through the command line, can do it.
2. It was 100% successful for me.
3. I added before: For CLI experienced users only. So anyone out of this scope will not try.
What I forgot to add (now added):
1. Dont try this if you are not familiar to CLI.
2. This method is not recommended by the Linux Mint Team.
I am extremely sorry for any inconvenience caused to you.\

Thankyou
