Install Emoji for Linux Mint (Chrome and Firefox) [tutorial]

Post by trytip »

It's unfortunate that installing emoji characters you can either use one setup for chrome or one for firefox, you can't have them both. As of now some work ok for both browsers but it's by no means perfect.
to test your browser go to test browser for emoji maybe you already have the ability to see emojis. https://emojipedia.org/people/

install emojis for chrome (this will give you color emojis for chrome and no firefox glyphs)
download fonts-noto-color-emoji_0~20180424-2_all.deb (6.8 MiB)
to uninstall run sudo apt remove --purge fonts-noto-color-emoji
when done installing open terminal and run sudo fc-cache -f -v which will rebuild the font cache
restart your chrome if it was open and you should have emojis in your browser test browser for emoji https://emojipedia.org/people/

install emojis for firefox (this will give you color emojis for firefox and black and white glyphs for chrome) install this if your main browser is firefox
download fonts-twemoji-svginot_1.4-1_all.deb (2.4 MiB)
to uninstall run sudo apt remove --purge fonts-twemoji-svginot
when done installing open terminal and run sudo fc-cache -f -v which will rebuild the font cache
restart your firefox if it was open and you should have emojis in your browser test browser for emoji https://emojipedia.org/people/

there are currently two emoji pickers that you can use to select and insert emojis in content. not perfect either. EmojiOne Picker which installs and works decent but the .desktop file places it in Other category and doesn't have an application icon working. you can edit your /usr/share/applications/Emojione Picker change Icon=comix or any icon you like and add this to the bottom to put it in the accessibility category Categories=Utility;Accessibility;

if you manage to get this installed, here'a a more recent picker https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/03/emo ... -app-linux
