Walk through on Mint install(solved)
First I'll start by asking you all not to burn me at the stake for this...
If there is detail on this and you can point me to the thread please do. I couldn't find anything and could only do a search with 5 words. I assume there's a reason, but I'm not well versed in all of this. I'm more knowledgeable than the average person on this type of stuff.. but no real experience in doing things of this caliber. My goal is to be able to run a dual boot with W7 and Mint.. and possibly another (Arch I'm thinking, trying to learn about hacking.. possible hobby). I'd like to get them all on the hard drive if possible as well. If USB is easier or better I'll stick to that.
Now, on to the main reason for the thread.
I cannot get the Mint torrent to download more than a few hundred Kb, says its 1.8.
I do not understand how to save the file as a .iso. Starts out as .iso.torrent and changing the file extension corrupts it.
I'm using Rufus 3.1 to flash the USB
Also, if there is anything on running multiple versions of Linux on a single USB please point me to that. If it's possible.
And I'm open to any and all advice on thread searching and how to operate around here.. I'm certain I'll catch some hate for this. I believe this would be covered by an in depth tutorial.. I'm sure I'm just missing something. But if I need to relocate this please let me know as well.

Re: Walk through on Mint install
so, with any Torrenting - - you need both Seeders & Leachers.
and if there is insufficient Seeders, then you can often get a stalled ISO download,
which it seems that you have encountered.
is there any reason, as to why you can't just get a Direct Download:
https://www.linuxmint.com/release.php?id=31
click on the version that you want, then choose a Download mirror that is closest to you.
it should Automatically save the File as an ISO without you having to do anything.
are you using that win-7 to get the ISO File ?.
as On this forum 'Rufus' is the most recommended image writer for making.
https://rufus.akeo.ie/
if you plan on using an USB Stick as the Boot Media.
BTW: if you cop some flak because you are an N00B - - then Please Let The Forum Team know this:

Re: Walk through on Mint install
Tried this download link. In my downloads once it's saved it says partial download. 35kb worth.
Yes, I'm on the Win7 computer I plan on using it with. I just did a full reboot of the computer (erased everything and reinstalled windows). So it should not be the computer causing issues. It's still running pretty flawlessly for now.
Do I need to wait.. and maybe it installs fully after a bit?

Re: Walk through on Mint install
So I'm still getting nothing. Just the partial download.
I've even tried doing a direct save of the file and selecting run and saving it that way.
Any other steps I need to be taking?

Re: Walk through on Mint install
Maybe One Step at a Time - - what is the Specifications for your Win-7 machine ?
- - CPU - - RAM - - Hard-drive - - figures
so that we can Match the Correct version of LinuxMint to that machine.
and what version of LinuxMint are you currently downloading ?
Don't RUN It - - Save Only ! !

Re: Walk through on Mint install
CPU - Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPY @2.30GHz
RAM - 4GB
Hard drive - 340GB
It's 64 bit.. probably obvious to you guys
Also I'm using a brand new 32GB USB
Save only is good to know, thanks.
I do so far appreciate the grown up nature of this forum, as compared to many other places online.
Edit - Linux Mint 18.3 "Sylvia" - Cinnamon (64-bit)
Currently downloading that version

Hard drive - 340GB

I was going to post an image of what it shows. Don't know how though.
Re: Walk through on Mint install
@jarrod_9427
You should have a file about 1.9 Gb when your download is complete.
Do you have a file of that approximate size in a download folder?

No, it's 36kb.
File extension is .iso, but the type say TORRENT file.
I click the link and hit save..

Re: Walk through on Mint install
You have the torrent link file (36kb sounds about right for this) and you need to open this link with a torrent client and it will download form several locations.
This is a good way to get the file if you understand the mechanics involved.
It may be easier like this:
When you go to htpps://linuxmint.com you will find several download links.
I normally choose a download mirror such as University of Oklahoma--but these all are trusted mirrors.
Click on one of the mirror links and when the pop-up appears choose 'Save to file'.
Depending on you internet connection this will take several minutes to an hour or more to download the almost 2 gb file.
Once downloaded report back here if you still have questions.
Cheers

Re: Walk through on Mint install
you need to get a File of around 1900Mb in size,
so in order to get the LM18x Cinnamon 64bit:
https://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=246
look for a Download Mirror that is close to your Location.
- Don't click on the Torrent Link, that is near the Top of that list.
Do Look for a Download Mirror - that is closest to your location,
and then click on that link
you should get a download a File of around 1900Mb in size ..
- post back here - which Mirror that you selected to use.

Re: Walk through on Mint install
I know in some countries they limit download files so if you can not download the direct file check with your ISP see if for some reason you have limited access.
Other than that the procedure is what others have said don't do the torrent if your not familiar with the process do the direct download.
I recommend either rufus or etcher to burn the ISO to usb stick or dvd. Etcher can be downloaded as an appimage from here. https://etcher.io with an appimage you do not have to install it it runs right from the image you downloaded, you may only have to give it permission to exicute as a program.
Good Luck and Welcome to Linux Mint

Re: Walk through on Mint install
You are clicking the "torrent" link,jarrod_9427 wrote: ⤴Wed Jun 27, 2018 12:00 am No, it's 36kb.
File extension is .iso, but the type say TORRENT file.
e.g. from
https://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=246
the torrent link ishttps://torrents.linuxmint.com/torrents/linuxmint-18.3-cinnamon-64bit.iso.torrent
The labels to that link say "TORRENT" and "Torrent", and the file extension and the file type are both "torrent".
A .torrent file is a small file that tell some other software how to download the big file. If you don't know about any of that, the easy way to download the iso is to do it directly, look for the (few-dozen) links under "Download Mirrors", e.g.
http://mirrors.advancedhosters.com/linuxmint/isos/stable/18.3/linuxmint-18.3-cinnamon-64bit.iso
The file you want to download ends with ".iso", NOT ".torrent"

Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Re: Walk through on Mint install
Alright thanks a ton guys. I feel like an idiot, I wasn't doing the torrent download correctly.
I've got it, now to put it to USB.
And good info on the mirror downloads as well, was wondering what those were. I'll put as solved up top.
Again thanks.. guess nothing I looked at specified to my level of noob that I needed a torrent app.

Re: Walk through on Mint install
No reason to feel that way - no one comes to anything knowing all there is to know about it. We all start at the beginning.
