Solving - Systemlog: Lightdm: PAM adding faulty module: Pam_kwallet.so and/or Pam_kwallet5.so

After installing Mint 19.1 64 bits with Cinnamon, you might see errors about pam_kwallet*.so in the system logfiles.

Code: Select all

lightdm: PAM adding faulty module: pam_kwallet5.so
It does not pose any problems, but just for good practise, I want my logfiles as clean as possible, making it easier to spot more significant problems.

These errors are due to an optional package KWallet, a password keeper like Keepass not installed with Mint.

It's a know and reported bug of Ubuntu in 2014 on which Mint is based, no idea why it isn't fixed yet: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1309535

Here's a workaround to get rid of unnecessary trying to load those files and solve these errors in the system logfile, by editing two configuration files and commenting out the optional kwallet.so and kwallet5.so loading:

Two files to edit:

Code: Select all

/etc/pam.d/lightdm
/etc/pam.d/lightdm-greeter
Lines to comment out: (adding '#' in front of the line)

Code: Select all

#auth optional pam_kwallet.so
#auth optional pam_kwallet5.so

#session optional pam_kwallet.so auto_start
#session optional pam_kwallet5.so auto_start

PPS Feel free to comment as I'm a new Linux user myself trying to solve my boot/systemlog errors: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=286910)
Hardware, operating systems, software and networking are are nothing else than necessary, cumbersome and easily replaceable evils to store and provide data. Triple backup your data at least, twice on-site, and another copy off-site.
