Courtesy of Bodhi Linux: gm10's mintupdate (advanced users only)

Post by Pjotr »

Note: not suitable for beginners, so meant for advanced users only!

Those of you who miss gm10's mintupdate (which was unfit for Linux Mint 20.x and Ubuntu 20.04), will be glad to know that it can now be installed in Mint 20.x after all, thanks to the efforts of the developers of Bodhi Linux.

The Bodhi devs have adopted it for Bodhi Linux 6.0, and they've modified it so that it's compatible now with the Ubuntu 20.04 codebase of Bodhi 6.0. This makes it also fit for Linux Mint 20.x.

This is how to install it in Mint 20.x:

1. Get the key of the Bodhi 6 repo:

Code: Select all

wget http://packages.bodhilinux.com/bodhi/pool/b6main/b/bodhilinux-keyring/bodhilinux-keyring_2020.12.17_all.deb
2. Install the key:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install ./bodhilinux-keyring_2020.12.17_all.deb
3. Launch Software Sources and add the following repo:

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.bodhilinux.com/bodhi focal b6main
4. Update and upgrade:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
5. Remove some cruft that came with it:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove software-properties-gtk
Enjoy! :)

P.S.: If you're looking for an extremely lightweight yet elegant operating system, I recommend to give Bodhi 6.0 a spin! It's well worth your while.

No, unfortunately he has completely disappeared from the face of the digital earth after posting his 11.000th message on this forum....

But the developers of Bodhi Linux are quite skilled, so luckily "his" mintupdate is in good hands now.

2 + 2 = 4

I wouldn't be surprised if he dropped his LM nym and took up residence as a Bodhi dev.

Haha. No, the reason that the Bodhi devs adopted his mintupdate is probably because I was able to persuade them to do so.

I like Bodhi Linux, but at the time I missed a good graphical updater in it. So I contacted its devs with a cool suggestion. The rest is history....

If you're running one of the *buntu's (version 20.04.x), the procedure for installing gm10's mintupdate is a bit different:

On 20.2 Mint can gms repo be uninstalled or backed out after the install?

If my experience with LM19.0 is anything to go by, no. For the first and only time I tried the upgrade route LM19 to LM20. gm10's tools got in the way and it was a real PITA to get rid of them to the point I could do the upgrade. Upgrade didn't do what I wanted (too many ppas, debs, additional repos) so reverted to a clean install. But won't be using gm10's tools again. Shame he's disappeared.

Does anyone know if gm10 chose to disappear Digitally, or did the Good Lord call him home?

There are some differences, some rather subtle and some more striking. Notably (but not exclusively) the feature that allows for easy installing of non-official kernels. As you may know, gm10 has been the lead developer for Mint's official mintupdate for a time, so it's good software. See also:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... uplus.html

Personally I don't care much for non-official kernels; in fact, I consider those risky and avoid them whenever reasonably possible. For me, the main attraction of gm10's mintupdate lies in the possibility to install it in all Ubuntu-based distro's. Whereas the official mintupdate can only be installed in Mint itself.

gm10 was one of the most knowledge able persons on the forum. Pity that he left without a trace. If one can't back out from his software, it's a major deterrent. I wonder why did he keep the the back out door closed.

I suspect he didn't and if he was still here he would tell you how to do it with a couple of commands.

Well, I have some proof for the contrary:

His last posting on this forum was on February 17, 2020:
search.php?author_id=235149&sr=posts

But his last activity on his Launchpad account was almost two months later, on April 10, 2020 (see the "timeshift" item):
https://launchpad.net/~gm10/+archive/ub ... s-n-pieces

So that doesn't look like a sudden demise or something, but more like a planned disappearance. I expect he ceased to be "gm10" because he got bored with it and now continues his internet presence under other aliases.

At the time, for me personally this behaviour was a bit disappointing, by the way. I liked the guy, and even worked with him on one of his projects.

I installed this and I can think of a number of non-advanced users who could use it, especially the text box that pops up in the upper right of the screen when an update is available. Of course, maybe not the installation of unapproved kernels, but I know a few users who could use a good kick in the pants when an update is released.
Someday, maybe I'll figure out exactly what the hell I'm doing.
