Needing translations for im-switch package.

Post by Kendall »

So it turns out that the im-switch package, better known as the "Input Method Switcher", is only translated into English, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. This is not just in Mint, but in Ubuntu and Debian as well. I'm guessing that neither upstream project is taking a very active interest in offering further translations for it as it's set to not display in Gnome by default, but for those of us who don't use Gnome it might be cool to have it translated farther. We can try to push the changes upstream later and see how well it goes. Anyway, I need all the translations I can get (hopefully as soon as possible) for the following phrase:

Input Method Switcher

Thanks.

Hi Kendall!
Because I've never heard of "Input Method Switcher": could you please explain it in a few sentences.
German: input method = Eingabemöglichkeit, switcher = Schalter.
But to find a good/ better translation, I should know a little bit more.

Přepínač vstupní metody (czech)
Prepínač vstupnej metódy (slovak)

...but WTH is that?
A better description needed :D

Probably just from a language standpoint, instead of relating it to a computer method (inputs), I might suggest Language switch or language switcher or language change
  • Or if we want to get abbreviated LS, as long as it is known with the full description in Mint documentation or a section on language translations or other than your own language for installations..

The phrase is very hard to translate to Dutch, but that happens more in software. Microsoft avoids this by using computer expert slang, which no one understood. I'm not going to do this as the rest of Linux Mint also does not (except Wine Wordpad...).

Invoermethode schakelaar might be a good translation. Fedora have translated it somewhat like this (can't just remember the exact phrase).

Edit: No, NO! Invoermethode keuze is much better. Schakelaar is a physical switch and not one in software.

Btw, I'm seeing many translation errors in Pidgin's plugin list.

The application itself translates well from what I can tell, but the .desktop file for the launcher only has a couple. Anyway, disregard this thread as I made the decision to hide this app by default. There are other, more user friendly, ways of accomplishing what this app can do.

There are more Chinese than any other race in the world so I have always thought that Chinese should be included alongside English (International Language) in Linux by default.

Google Translate showed "Input Method Switcher" as "输入法切换器" which is quite accurate.

Slovak translation: "Prepínač vstupu" or "Prepínač vstupnej metódy" // the second one will be better // :P

Hope not to late, but to portuguese [Brazil] "Input Method" is "Método de entrada". Switcher is a word hard to translate. The right word would be "comutador", getting "Comutador do método de entrada" but is a really unusual word. In some cases, just "Método de entrada" would be better.
