Cinnamon crashes after installing kernel 4.13.0-26

Post by JChristensen »

It looks like other folks have similar issues, so I'm posting this as another data point.
This old Dell desktop was running great with 4.10.0-42 but then I applied the update to 4.13.0-26 to address the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities. After rebooting, I received a popup window that said, "Cinnamon just crashed. You are currently running in Fallback Mode. Do you want to restart Cinnamon?"

Replying "yes" just resulted in another crash, and the same message. I found the following in both syslog and dmesg:

Code: Select all

[ 43.654690] cinnamon[1828]: segfault at 0 ip 00007fe5657d906e sp 00007ffd3e34a740 error 4 in libc-2.23.so[7fe56574b000+1c0000]
While in fallback mode, I was able to switch to the nouveau driver and that seems to be working fairly well. The newest driver shown in Driver Manager is nvidia-340. I am also running LM18.3 on a newer HP laptop, and that machine shows nvidia-384, and it didn't have any issues upgrading to the 4.13.0-26 kernel.

Here is inxi -Fxzc0 for the Dell desktop machine. Any and all suggestions welcome!

The nvidia-340 in the Ubuntu repositories hasn't been updated yet to support the the 4.13 kernel. I would suggest installing the newest 4.4.0 kernel

@JeremyB, thanks for the info. Things seem OK with the 4.13 kernel and the nouveau driver. Is there any reason that's not a good combination? If there will be an update coming to nvidia-340, maybe I'll just go with that and watch for the update. Or I can use the 4.4 kernel if there are issues.

I removed the 4.13.0-26 kernel, rebooted, went back to 4.10.0-42 and even though I changed back to nvidia-340 in Driver Manager and rebooted again, inxi still reports nouveau, even though Driver Manager still says nvidia-340.

I need a tie breaker ;-/
