New Install / Boot Question

Post by flagshipone »

I am taking an old file server that I would like to use as a media server. I would like to use the Plex Media Server software as it works with my TV but it requires either Windows 10 or some form of Linux.

I decided to upgrade from Windows Vista to ubuntu 16.04. I went through that process but upon reboot the machine would not boot from the local disk (hd0). After several attempts at correction from online research I decided to switch gears and try Mint. Upon installation I got this error:

Error: attempt to read or write outside disk 'hd0'
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue>

any thoughts on how I can make this machine boot from the local disk on its own?

Hello flagshipone Image

Welcome to Linux Mint and the Linux Mint forum :)

It's difficult to work from the grub rescue prompt, but lets try to boot the kernel.

I'm assuming you're posting from another computer so you'll have to type the responses here when I ask you to paste the results.

At that prompt enter ls and paste back the results here.

apologies for taking so long to respond:

grub rescue> ls
(hd0) (hd1) (hd1,msdos1) (hd2) (hd3) (hd3,msdos3)

Boot successfully repaired.

You can now reboot your computer.
Please do not forget to make your BIOS boot on sdb (ATA ST500DM002-1BC14) disk!

The boot files of [Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia] are far from the start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them. You may want to retry after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, >200MB, start of the disk). This can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair]. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootPartition)

From the Boot Repair output, looks like you have 4 internal hard-drives, ie sda/1.5TB, sdb/500GB, sdc/1.5TB and sdd/500GB in ms-dos/MBR mode.
... sdb has LM 18.3 installed and sdd still has Win Vista installed.

Normally, for a non-mainstream multi-drives setup, the manual "Something else" install method has to be used. If you intended to install LM on drive /sdd, then manually partition /sdd ( viewtopic.php?f=42&t=122276 ) and ensure that the "Device for boot loader installation" is /sdd. After installation, select "Continue testing" and Shutdown the computer. Remove the Live LM USB/DVD, boot the computer into BIOS setup and change the 1st boot device to /sdd.
... So, how did you install Ubuntu and then LM.?

What is the brand, model and specifications of your computer.? Or from the Live LM USB/DVD, provide the Terminal output for inxi -Fxz and sudo parted -l

the computer originally had windows vista installed on sdb rather than on sdd. not really sure how anything but data files got installed on sdd but none the less sdb is where I wanted the Ubuntu install to happen.

appreciate the info and will give the "Something else" install method a try.

didnt work. I have since wiped all 4 drives and reformatted them back to zero

Is there a version of this ( viewtopic.php?f=42&t=122276 ) that works with the current version of Mint? I ask because the screen shots are somewhat different from what I am seeing here.
