boot a Live Media and then use the Gparted program,
that is on that Live media - - is one way to do that.

in Gparted - - R/click an partition & select the Delete option,,
- - if that option is Grayed Out - - that means that the partition is still Mounted:
- R/click & select unmount option.

if all else fails - - use Device - - 'Create Partition Table'

you should be able to get an Blank Drive using Gparted,,
& then re-create some New Partitions, again.

that Gparted is a very useful program.

One partition remained, but delete was grayed out.
I ran DD which did not completely wipe the drive of LVM. I did not want to learn how to manage LVM just to wipe the drive.

I finally ran the install again and selected the option to wipe the entire drive and install. That got rid of everything. I will now go back and do a "Something Else" install and partition the drive the way I want.

I am installing Mint 18 Cinnamon on a 17 year old system that runs large format SCSI scanner and large format printer. It is not connected to the internet.

Will have to check the man to see if there is a way to wipe a LVM drive w/dd
