Resizing partition with gparted

Post by jenjean » Sun Feb 10, 2019 10:04 am

Hello,

I need to repartition the linux ext4 partition on my harddrive to (sadly) reinstall windows.
I'm trying to allocate more space with gparted on this main partition to create a new NTFS one.

The problem is that, when in gparted, the programm wont allow me to resize the partition, even if there is space available (252gb free on a 461gb partition). The programm indicate that the minimum and maximum size for re-sizing are the same.

Any idea of how I could do this?

I'm on a Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit, cinnamon version is 3.6.7
My laptop is a HP X360

I need also to specify that my skills are quit limitated.
Also, my linux mint is in french.

Thanks a lot, I hope I'm clear...

The partition would be mounted. You can't change a mounted partition in any way. Unmounted it.
When you install Windows Mint will become non bootable.

I am using Mint 19.1 Cinnamon 64 bit with AMD A8/7410 processor . Memory 8GB

that is - - boot into an Live LinuxMint Media & run the Gparted that is available there:
- you can't resize the system that you've booted from .. .

but you can, if you've got an multi_boot system, like this Laptop has:
- you can then use Gparted on one of the other Linux Systems, & which I've done, on the odd occasion.

Hello jenjean Image

Welcome to Linux Mint and the Linux Mint forum :)

You would have to boot the Mint installation media and run gparted from there,

If the installation media automatically mounts the partition you would have to unmount it first.

Good Luck
