What is blocking me from installing Mint.

Post by dgoddard » Fri Nov 08, 2019 10:46 pm

My old gateway computer is dying (maybe just the battery) however I have a newer Lenovo 3899 which was gifted to me but without the password. I tried to use a bootable flash drive to install linux on it but It wont boot from that drive and I am wondering if there is something installed on the hard drive to prevent me from doing the installation I have set the bios to boot from the flash drive but it won't do that. I am aware that microsoft @$%$% has put something into some of their versions to prevent their crappy OS from being overwritten and it could be that but maybe it is something else as well.
any suggestions on how to install mint on this Lenovo ??????
I never met anybody that I couldn't learn something from

Dd you try if your flash drive boots in another computer? You may just have made a mistake when creating it. It's also possible that USB booting was disabled in the BIOS/UEFI though (a standard security measure), you should check the settings.

It may also be that, if win is on the laptop, that is not shutting down, just hibernating. Start windows and turn off fast boot.

That wouldn't prevent a boot from the USB though, would it? But should be disabled either way, good point. The feature in Windows 10 is called "Fast Startup" by the way, "Fast Boot" is usually the name for a BIOS feature to skip some power on self-tests.

And skip a lot of hardware initialisation.

As well, yes. In particular external devices often don't get initialized, which may require disabling of the feature if you need them at boot.

Or, in some cases, if you need the device running at all. If I enable it, my PCIe hardware RAID doesn't come up and isn't seen by the kernel.

Oh interesting, it's not booting the firmware at all? I haven't run into that myself yet but good to know.

That's correct. The aacraid driver doesn't get loaded, and forcing it to load doesn't help. I had hoped to save considerable pre-grub time by initialising it after the DE was up but my plan was foiled. Though I did manage to save a few seconds by not loading the RAID card's BIOS because I don't need it to be bootable.

Yes. Fast boot is suspect #1 for me in hardware going missing in action.

Cheers.

that Fast Boot can often hinder any other Boot Media, from even being seen,
- let alone being able to boot-up.

Hello dgoddard,

do you have a more specific description of your laptop model instead "Lenovo 3899"? I can't find it on Lenovo's website or in the www with that.

If your laptop has a password, is it the BIOS password? If it is, you'll need to reset it.

My thinking too. A point everyone else seems to have overlooked.
Kernel: 4.15.0-46-generic x86_64 bits
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.8.9
Distro: Linux Mint 19 Tara

Laptop HP-ProBook-470-G2 8Gb RAM SSD
Server AMD Phenom 9650 - GEForce 9400GT 6Gb RAM
+ three other Mint machines
Out of my mind - please leave a message
