Intermittent file system checks on boot

Running Mint 19.1 Mate 64bit

In the last few weeks I've been getting the file system check on startup ("press ctrl-c to cancel..."), but not every time. It only takes 5-10 secs to complete then everything continues as normal. I've checked the SMART data in gnome-disks and everything is "OK" - the HDD is less than a year old (and so is my Mint installation).

Is this cause for concern?

You could install gsmartcontrol using the Software Manager. Once installed, launch it. Look at the attributes tab and see if any pending reallocation events or other attributes that might indicate trouble.
To mark this issue solved, go to your original 1st post and click the edit pencil and add [Solved] at the beginning of the title and click Submit.

I've installed gsmartcontrol and I think it all looks good... any warning signals in there?

Drive looks healthy, and that's a WD Black - High quality HDD.
I suggest booting to a live session and launch gparted, highlight the root partition, right click and choose check. It will take a while, then generate a report.
To mark this issue solved, go to your original 1st post and click the edit pencil and add [Solved] at the beginning of the title and click Submit.

Thanks, I'll give that a try in the next few days and report back. This reminds me to do update my backup sometime soon as well!

Most Linux installs, including Mint, set up fsck to run periodically. This is simply a normal maintenance cycle to check that there are no problems with the filesystems that are on your disk(s). If fsck finds an error, it will let you know about it.

The gsmart tools are another, but separate tool set, that run against the hardware layer, rather than the filesystem layer.

They are both useful, but separate processes.
I feel more like I do than I did when I got here.

As jglen490, fsck runs once in a while. I get a filesystem check so often too. :D
